Delray Beach International, Florida Gambill has not won a title since taking the same title in 2001 |
Jan-Michael Gambill beat fellow American Mardy Fish 6-0 7-6 (7-5) to win the International Tennis Championships for the second time in three years. The fourth-seeded Gambill opened and closed the match with aces.
"This was by far the best match I played the whole week," Gambill said.
"I came out firing on all 12 cylinders. I was serving great, returning well. I played some really good tennis to fight through some tough matches this week."
It was Fish's first ATP Tour final, and he was shaky at the start.
He had won 36 consecutive service games coming into the final but had trouble controlling his big serve in the first set.
Gambill used a series of sharp returns to break three consecutive times.
Fish settled into the match in the second set and took a 3-0 lead in the tiebreaker.
But Gambill pulled it back to three all when Fish smacked a forehand volley beyond the baseline.
Despite the loss, Fish will climb to a career-high ranking this week.
