Agassi came into the event with a 12-0 record this year |
Andre Agassi lost for the first time in 2003 as Sweden's Thomas Enqvist fought back to win their first-round encounter 6-7 6-4 6-1. The 32-year-old American came into the tournament looking to close the gap in the rankings on world number one Lleyton Hewitt.
But after 12 successive victories, the Australian Open champion saw his unbeaten run come to an end against the experienced Enqvist.
"It's a big one for me to beat Andre," said Enqvist, who had managed just one win in seven matches this year befpre beating the number two seed.
"I've been struggling with injuries and I've been trying to come back to the level I think I should play. It shows me that I can still play very good tennis."
The former world number four was devastating from inside the baseline and also served up 18 aces against one of the world's most proficient returners.
Xavier Malisse's poor start to the season continued as he went down 7-6 7-6 to American Cecil Mamiit.
The defeat is the Belgian's sixth in nine matches this year, and his fourth in a row.
Mamiit will play home favourite Taylor Dent in the second round after the American beat Andrei Pavel 6-3 7-5.
