Mariano Zabaleta will now face American James Blake |
Mariano Zabaleta secured a place in round three with victory over fifth seed Rainer Schuettler of Germany. The Argentine won 6-3 2-6 6-4 to set up a meeting with James Blake, who beat Thomas Enqvist 7-6 6-7 6-2.
Schuettler has enjoyed a great start to 2003, reaching the Australian Open final, but says he is beginning to feel the effects of his success.
"So far, it has been an outstanding year for me, but I still have to work a lot on my game," he said.
"I've travelled a lot since January, it's not easy. But you have to stay focused with every match."
Enqvist saved five match points in a second-set tie-breaker against Blake before eventually succumbing to the American.
Ecuador's Giovanni Lapentti failed to build on his shock win over fourth seed Paradorn Srichaphan, losing 6-3 7-6 to Spain's David Sanchez.
Taylor Dent reached the last eight but had to come from a set down to beat fellow American Cecil Mamiit 4-6 6-2 6-0.

Third seed Marcelo Rios, the highest seed left in the draw, moved into the last eight with a three-set victory over Dutchman Martin Verkerk.
"I don't think I was playing that bad. He just wasn't making mistakes," said the Chilean had to come from a set down to win 2-6 6-4 7-5.
Rios will now play South Korea's Lee Hyung-Taik, who beat Switzerland's Michel Kratochvil 6-2 6-3.
"I've really got my confidence up from my win in Sydney," said Lee, who has not dropped a set in his two matches this week.
"Physically I feel fitter than I did at this point last year, so I feel like I'm playing some of my best tennis."
American Mardy Fish and Spain's Alberto Martin will meet in the quarter-finals after victories on Wednesday.
Fish beat Brazil's Fernando Meligeni 6-2 7-6 while Martin overcame Georgia's Irakli Labadze 6-4 6-2.
