Lleyton Hewitt was back in action after four weeks off
Top seed Lleyton Hewitt shrugged off a four-week absence from competitive tennis to book his place in round two.

The Australian, who was playing his first match since the Davis Cup win over Great Britain, beat Spain's Fernando Vicente 6-4 6-3.

"I was a little rusty in my first match," said Hewitt.

"It had a weird start with three straight breaks of serve. He seemed to play a lot better on my service games than his.

"But if I'm working to get to my best tennis this week, this was a great match. I couldn't have asked for more, being off the court in two sets."

Giovanni Lapentti caused a major surprise by beating fourth seed Paradorn Srichaphan in straight sets.

The 20-year-old Ecuadorian qualifier, younger brother of world number 37 Nicolas, came through 7-6 6-2 for by far the biggest win of his career.

Rainer Schuettler kept up his good early season form with a first-round win over Harel Levy of Israel.

The German, seeded fifth, won 2-6 7-5 6-1 ro record his 14th victory in 19 matches so far this year.

Sixth seed Alex Corretja also made it through, beating Russia's Dmitry Tursunov 6-4 6-2.

But seventh seed Juan Ignacio Chela was beaten 7-6 3-6 6-1 by Australia's Mark Philippoussis.

Delray Beach International, Florida

Top seed Andy Roddick headed the list of big-name casualties on Tuesday.

An ankle injury forced him to retire when trailing 7-6 3-2 to fellow American Mardy Fish.

Second seed Guillermo Coria, fifth seed Arnaud Clement and seventh seed Stefan Koubek were also eliminated.

Coria went down 7-5 6-2 to Sargis Sargsian, American qualifier Robert Kendrick beat Koubek 6-4 6-4 while Clement lost 6-3 7-6 to Switzerland's Michel Kratochvil.

Eighth seed Vincent Spadea dropped just three games as he beat Frenchman Michael Llodra 6-3 6-0.
