World Track guide - Road warriors

The likes of Geraint Thomas and Bradley Wiggins have chosen to take a year away from track cycling and focus on road racing but I don't think there's any danger that either will miss the track events at the 2012 Olympics.

After his nasty fall in Italy a couple of weeks ago, Geraint may be wishing he had stuck to the velodrome, although I think he may decide he wants to concentrate on the road after London.

Meanwhile, the road will make both riders stronger and gives them a chance to do something for themselves rather than being part of the big GB squad structure.

If you have natural speed and cadence you don't forget how to ride on a track and you can quite quickly get back into the groove.

For me, riding on the road was more of a means to an end, improving my track performances, but I was part of a small road team, which allowed me to be more flexible.
