The GB&I team was expanded to become Europe in 1979, and a young Irishman called Des Smyth (left) made his debut, losing 5&3 to Hale Irwin.

At Walton Heath in 1981, Europe lost 18-9 but Smyth and Bernard Gallacher beat Irwin and Raymond Floyd in the foursomes.

Smyth became the oldest winner on the European Tour when he won in Madeira in 2001, aged 48 years 34 days.

He will be a vice-captain to Ian Woosnam at the K Club.
