Lester Piggott won his first race aged 12 in 1948 and rode his first of nine Epsom Derby winners in 1954 on Never Say Die.

Piggott, who won over 5,300 races, was champion jockey 11 times before retiring at the end of the 1985 season to become a racehourse trainer.

But in 1987 he was jailed for tax irregularities and he resumed his career as a jockey upon his release from prison in 1990.

Piggott claimed a famous victory in the Breeders' Cup Mile in the United States within 10 days of his return and, aged 56, he won the 2,000 Guineas in 1992 on Rodrigo de Triano - his 30th British Classic victory.
