Herath propels Sri Lanka to glory
First Test, Faisalabad, day five: Sri Lanka 243 & 438 beat Pakistan 264 & 216 by 201 runs

The first wicket of the final day: Youhana falls lbw to Herath

Rangana Herath took four of the six wickets Sri Lanka needed on the final day to complete a 201-run victory over Pakistan in the Faisalabad Test.

The hosts began the day on 114-4, needing a hypothetical 418 to win, and first lost the crucial wicket of Yousuf Youhana lbw to Herath for 44.

When Abdul Razzaq then departed for a golden duck and Moin Khan for a single, the writing was on the wall.

Shoaib Malik top-scored with 59 but it was all over 40 minutes after lunch.

Herath struck after the overnight pair of Youhana and Malik had defended stoutly for the first 75 minutes of the day.

They had put on 63 runs for the fifth wicket when Herath, playing in his sixth Test, deceived Youhana with a good arm ball which the batsman misjudged.

With the first delivery of his next over, Herath removed Razzaq lbw to complete a sorry match for the Pakistani all-rounder who failed to take a wicket in 37 overs.

New man Moin, whose place is under threat due to poor batting form, averted the hat-trick but in the next over edged Chaminda Vaas to wicket-keeper Romesh Kaluwitharana.

Seven wickets down at lunch, Pakistan were in no shape to quell the Sri Lankans.

The next wicket fell when Malik, attempting to farm the strike, invited his partner Mohammad Sami to go for a suicidal run and Sami was out by a distance.

Shoaib Akhtar hit Herath for a six and a four but at the other end Malik's lengthy vigil was finally ended when he was caught and bowled by the slow left-armer off a leading edge.

The final wicket came when Shoaib, attempting to hit Herath out of the ground, was easily stumped.
