Veteran opener Sanath Jayasuriya made the most of a let-off to hit his 13th Test century and put Sri Lanka on top against Pakistan in Faisalabad.

Jayasuriya, who was caught off a Shoaib Akhtar no-ball on nine, hit an unbeaten 131 as the tourists reached the close of day three on 285-3.

It gave them a lead of 264, with Kumar Sangakkara (59) and Mahela Jayawardene (57) providing excellent support.

Shoaib took two of the three wickets to fall but his 13 overs cost 61 runs.

Pakistan only added only eight runs to their overnight score of 256-8 at the start of play.

Shoaib was lbw to spinner Rangana Herath (3-68) for nine and last man Danish Kaneria was run out by Jayasuriya for one, leaving Mohammad Sami unbeaten on five.

But the home side struck back as Shoaib, who took 5-60 in Sri Lanka's first innings, found a way through Atapattu's defence with his fifth ball.

It completed a miserable match for the Sri Lanka skipper, who also failed to score on the opning day when he was out third ball.

And it could have been 15-2 when Shoaib found the edge of Jayasuriya's bat but he was left frustrated by umpire Billy Bowden's no-ball call.

Sri Lanka were grateful for the reprieve and it was Sangakkara who led the counter-attack, hitting 10 boundaries as he and Jayasuriya put on 98.

He was eventually caught behind off Shoaib before tea, but replacement Jayawardene soon settled in as bat continued to dominate ball.

The tourists added 100 runs between tea but lost Jayawardene in the process when he was caught by Moin Khan off leg-spinner Danish Kaneria after a third-wicket stand of 118.

It failed to disturb Jayasuriya, who reached his third Test century against Pakistan in the grand manner by hoisting a ball from Kaneria over long on for six.

He also collected 19 boundaries before bad light ended play three overs early - new partner Thilan Samaraweera ending the day on 15.
