Pakistan took a slender first innings lead over Sri Lanka at end of the second day's play in the first Test.
The home side reached 256-8, 13 ahead, after Sri Lanka earlier lost their last three wickets for 10 in Faisalabad.
Thilan Samaraweera added the three runs he needed for his century before Sri Lanka were bowled out for 243 with Shoaib Akhtar claiming figures of 5-60.
Yasir Hameed posted 58 as Pakistan reached tea on 185-4, but Sri Lanka fought back as four late wickets fell.
Inzamam-ul-Haq fell for 32 soon after the break, top-edging left-arm spinner Rangana Herath.
And Shoaib Malik was two short of his maiden half century when Chaminda Vaas ran him out off a direct throw from mid on.
Sanath Jayasuriya opened up Pakistan tail by dismissing Moin Khan late in the last session.
And Abdul Razzaq, who made 39, was neatly caught by Mahela Jayawardene in the slips three overs before stumps off left-arm seamer Vaas.
After Hameed's blazing start Pakistan were comfortably placed but Dilhara Fernando struck twice after lunch
Asim Kamal was out first then Hameed, who hit 10 boundaries, mistimed a pull shot and Jehan Mubarak plucked a two-handed diving catch at square leg.
Earlier, Pakistan took just 22 deliveries to wrap up Sri Lanka's first innings.
Samaraweera scored his first test century outside Sri Lanka with a square drive off Shoaib's first delivery, but two balls later offered a tame catch at square leg.
Samaraweera, who had scored his previous three Test centuries in Colombo, faced 232 balls in his five-and-a-half-hour knock which included 10 boundaries.
