Inzamam glad to overcome pressure

The trophy was shared after each team won a single Test
Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq said he was not surprised his team stumbled before crossing the winning-post to beat Sri Lanka in Karachi.

"It was a pressure game and in pressure every team loses wickets," said Inzamam after his team plunged to 57-4 before reaching their target of 137.

Pakistan lost in Faisalabad but fully deserved to draw the two-match series.

Inzamam said: "I was expecting to level the series. We fought well throughout and showed a lot of character."

Inzamam, who did not bat after hurting his back scoring 117 runs in the first innings, added: "We were without our main bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Sami, yet we managed to win with the available resources.

"We came out of a tight situation today and this is good for our tour to Australia."

Coach Bob Woolmer was not totally enamoured of his team's performance, however, saying: "We played in this Test in patches.

"There were times when we gave away the initiative and allowed them to come back."

But spinner Danish Kaneria, revelling in his role as the main wicket-taker, was delighted to take 10 wickets in the match to win the man-of-the-match award.

Revealing that long bowling spells with his county Essex had helped him develop, he added that he was looking forward to touring Australia with Pakistan.

"Australian wickets have lot of bounce and that should help my bowling because I also get natural bounce due to my height.

"It will be a challenge performing well against the Australians in their backyard."

Sri Lanka captain Marvan Atapattu praised his team for forcing the match into the final session after being bowled out for 208 on the first day.

He added: "The toss played a crucial part in this game as the wicket was fantastic for batting after the first day.

"The bowlers looked like great bowlers on the first day because the wicket was a bit damp."

  • Pakistan have announced their squad for a one-off limited-overs international in Calcutta against India on 13 November.

Fast bowlers Shoaib and Sami have been included after both passed fitness tests, but batsman Yasir Hameed is dropped after a string of low scores.

Uncapped batsman Aamer Bashir is named instead, with Shahid Afridi and opener Taufeeq Umar also in the party.

Pakistan squad: Imran Farhat, Taufeeq Umar, Inzamam-ul-Haq (capt), Yousuf Youhana, Younis Khan, Abdul Razzaq, Shahid Afridi, Kamran Akmal (wkt), Naved-ul-Hasan, Shoaib Malik, Salman Butt, Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Sami, Riaz Afridi, Aamer Bashir.
