Sehwag ton lifts India
Second Test, Mohali, India v New Zealand

Virender Sehwag
Virender Sehwag hit a superb unbeaten century to finally give Mohali's 20,000 fans something to cheer in the second Test against New Zealand.

The home side reached 203-1 at the close on day three, replying to 630-6 by the tourists, with Sehwag 128 not out and skipper Rahul Dravid on nine.

New Zealand declared shortly before lunch after Craig McMillan became the fourth centurion in their innings.

But Sehwag led the counter-attack in an opening stand of 164 with Akash Chopra.

The day saw more back-breaking work for the bowlers and a 0-0 drawn series looks certain.

India sent down 198.3 overs in the New Zealand innings, with spinner Anil Kumble sending down 66 of them for figures of 3-181.

McMillan's 100 not out took 130 balls and included a six and seven fours, with Daniel Vettori contributing 48 to an unbroken partnership of 90.

Mark Richardson (145), Lou Vincent (106) and Scott Styris (119) had all reached three figures during the first two days.

It was the 10th instance of four batsmen hitting centuries in one Test innings and the second time New Zealand have achieved the feat.

The Black Caps easily surpassing their previous best score overseas of 553-7 against Australia at Brisbane in 1985, passing 600 for only the second time in 73 years.

Any hopes the Kiwis harboured of making early inroads into India's top order soon evaporated as Sehwag and Chopra saw off the new ball in confidert manner.

They had to wait until the 48th over for their sole success so far when Chopra was caught by Nathan Astle off seamer Daryl Tuffey for 60, his maiden Test half century.

Sehwag permitted himself few liberties against Vettori's accurate spin bowling and the left-armer had bowled 24 overs at a cost of only 27 runs by the close.

But Sehwag found easier pickings from the rest of the New Zealand attack as he cruised to his fourth hundred, an innings featuring two sixes and 16 fours.
