Second Test, Mohali, day one Lou Vincent and Mark Richardson shared a record stand for New Zealand against India to lead their side to 247-1 on the opening day of the second Test.
They put on 231 for the first wicket before Vincent was lbw to Anil Kumble for 106 in the final session.
It beat the 222-run partnership between John Reid and Bert Sutcliffe at Delhi in 1955.
Richardson survived a slip chance early in the day and was 102 not out at the close, with Scott Styris on seven.
India went into the game hoping to repeat their tactics of batting first, making a big total and then trusting on their spinners to bowl the tourists out twice.
It did not work at Ahmedabad as New Zealand hung on for a draw, and the tables were turned once Stephen Fleming won the toss and chose to bat first.
Both sides made one change with Yuvraj Singh making his Test debut in place of injured Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly, and Ian Butler taking over from Jacob Oram for the Kiwis.
Richardson should have been dismissed on 10 when he edged an attempted drive off Zaheer Khan and stand-in captain Rahul Dravid dropped a low chance at first slip.
It proved a costly error as the home side had to wait until the 80th over to separate the opening pair.
Dravid reflects on what might have been after a chance goes begging |
After a new ball burst from Khan and Lakshmipathy Balaji, Dravid sprang a surprise by bringing on Sachin Tendulkar as first change.
He sent down four tidy overs at a cost of five runs before lunch and struck Vincent a painful blow on the knee which forced him to send for a runner for an hour.
It almost led to his downfall on 29 only for wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel to fumble a throw, with runner Paul Wiseman short of his ground.
The pain eventually subsided and Vincent raised the tempo during the afternoon, advancing down the pitch to loft Harbhajan Singh for six.
He and Richardson achieved the highest opening stand for New Zealand against India when they went past the 149 shared by John Wright, now India's coach, and Trevor Franklin at Napier 13 years ago. Vincent struck two sixes and 14 fours in reaching his second Test century before finally being given out after missing an attempted sweep.
Richardson was increasingly hampered by cramp but stuck it out with tremendous determination to bring up his own hundred off 266 balls with an edged single to third man shortly before the close.
