However, Calzaghe faced two more underwhelming fights against Peter Manfredo and the wild Sakio Bika before Denmark's WBA and WBC champion Mikkel Kessler came calling. Kessler was unbeaten in 39 fights and fancied to win the fight by some wise boxing heads. However, after weathering some uncomfortable moments in the early stages, Calzaghe had assumed control by the middle rounds and eventually took a unanimous decision. It was Calzaghe's 21st defence of his WBO belt, and his last fight at super-middleweight.
