Calzaghe had a stellar amateur career, winning three Amateur Boxing Association titles and 110 of his 120 contests. He suffered the biggest disappointment of his career when he was overlooked for the Olympics in 1992, but turned pro the following year and his first fight was a first-round stoppage of Paul Hanlon on 1 October 1993. He finished seven of his first nine opponents inside one round and claimed the British super-middleweight title with an eighth-round stoppage of Stephen Wilson on 28 October 1995. Calzaghe had eight more fights before defeating Englishman Chris Eubank on 11 October 1997 to claim the WBO super-middleweight belt.
