Sunderland move up to eighth, with Burnley 19th in table and winless in 15 league games
Sunderland claimed a comfortable victory against strugglers Burnley, whose miserable run without a Premier League win extended to 15 matches.
Once Habib Diarra's shot deflected off visiting defender Axel Tuanzebe to provide the hosts with a ninth-minute opener, the outcome appeared to be a foregone conclusion.
And so it proved as Sunderland celebrated a 12th game without a home defeat - the longest unbeaten start to a top-flight campaign at home by a newly promoted side since Nottingham Forest in 1977-78.
The hosts, who have exceeded expectations on their return to the Premier League after a eight-year absence, claimed their second goal in the 32nd minute.
Diarra rounded off a sweeping move down the right with a low effort that Burnley goalkeeper Martin Dubravka should have done better with.
However, it was no more than Regis le Bris' side deserved.
Sunderland played with an intensity and purpose that Burnley simply failed to match and Moroccan Chemsdine Talbi put the gloss on an excellent night's work from the hosts with a stunning third goal that flew into the top corner from 20 yards.
The success lifted the Black Cats up to eighth in the table - five points off the top four - while the second-bottom Clarets, who have not taken three points since 26 October, remain 11 points from safety.

Habib Diarra scored his first Premier League goal of the season for Sunderland
Sunderland's success this term has owed much to being able to turn the Stadium of Light into a fortress.
While there is no suggestion they will be able to emulate Brian Clough's Forest side, who went the entire season without defeat at the City Ground on their way to winning the old First Division championship, the Black Cats are well placed to set a landmark of their own.
With a 15-match unbeaten home run in 2009-10, Birmingham City hold the record for a newly promoted side in the Premier League era.
Sunderland's current feat has left them in exalted company too.
Only Atletico Madrid, Napoli, Juventus, Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund and Paris St-Germain remain without a home loss this term across Europe's big five leagues.
While the loss of six first-team players at the Africa Cup of Nations contributed to a recent downturn in form, all those players are now back in the fold, and Sunderland were able to make light of the continued absence of captain Granit Xhaka with an ankle injury.
And Senegal international Diarra - effectively the man standing in for the Switzerland midfielder - played a starring role as he netted his first goal for the club since his summer arrival from Strasbourg.
His driven effort which flicked off Tuanzebe gave the Black Cats' their earliest league goal since Javier Manquillo's strike against Chelsea in May 2017 and laid the platform for what followed.
Along with striker Brian Brobbey, the visitors struggled to deal with the threat and direct running of Diarra, who helped his country to Afcon glory.
Sunderland also showed they were equally capable of cutting through the visitors, with Morocco international Talbi's third strike of the campaign arriving after 10 passes - the joint-longest sequence leading to a league goal for his side this term.
Despite potential of Europe, 40 points still the target - Le Bris
If one moment summed up a listless Burnley performance it would be, when they were awarded a first-half free-kick midway inside the Sunderland half.
If it was not bad enough they conceded a sixth goal inside the opening 10 minutes of a league game this term, Burnley - having loaded the home penalty area with players to attack an expected delivery - instead went short. And they immediately conceded a free-kick in return when Florentino Luis blocked Talbi's attempt to close down the ball outside the box.
Sadly for Burnley supporters it was far from an isolated moment of poor decision-making which contributed to them failing to register a single effort on target.
Nor was it restricted to the way they tried to attack, with their attempts to play out from the back repeatedly inviting pressure and providing Sunderland with several opportunities to increase the margin of their victory.
With the basics of game management sadly lacking, far from leaving the Stadium of Light with hope, Burnley's prospects of Premier League survival appear to be an even gloomier proposition.
'Unacceptable' - Parker fumes at 'passive' Burnley
Sunderland travel to Premier League leaders Arsenal for their next Premier League game on Saturday, 7 February (15:00 GMT).
Burnley host third-bottom West Ham, who sit directly above them in the table, at the same time on the same day.

Sunderland have lost just one of their last 12 home league games against Burnley (W8 D3), going down 4-2 in the Championship in October 2022.
Following their 2-0 win at Turf Moor in August, Burnley are looking to complete the league double over Sunderland for the first time since 1972-73.
Sunderland have lost two of their last three Premier League matches (W1), as many as in their previous 13 combined (W4 D7). The Black Cats are yet to lose consecutive Premier League matches this season, one of four sides yet to do so; the others are Arsenal, Brighton and Manchester United.
Burnley remain winless in their last 14 Premier League games (D5 L9); in their top-flight history, only from February 1889 to February 1890 have the Clarets ever endured a longer winless streak (19).
Although they have nine more points (33) already than in their last Premier League campaign in 2016-17 (24), Sunderland are actually averaging fewer shots per game in 2025-26 (9.7) than they did in 2016-17 (10.2). It’s their fewest shots per game in a Premier League season on record (since 1999-2000).
Across the first 16 matchdays of this Premier League season, no side drew fewer games than Burnley (1, level with Man City). Since MD17, the Clarets have drawn the most games of any side (5 in 7 games), and could draw four top-flight games in a row for the first time since January 1971.
Sunderland are the only side yet to lose a home Premier League match this season, winning six and drawing five of their 11 games at the Stadium of Light. The only promoted side to have a longer home unbeaten run in a Premier League season is Birmingham City in 2009-10 (15).
Only Leeds United have conceded more Premier League goals in the 90th minute or later this season than Burnley (7) – only in the 2018-19 campaign have the Clarets shipped more 90th minute goals in a campaign, letting in 11.
Brian Brobbey has scored three goals in his last four Premier League appearances for Sunderland and has the best minutes per goal ratio of any Black Cats player this season (one every 175 minutes). It’s the fifth-best ratio by a Sunderland player in a season (750+ mins played) and best since Jermain Defoe in 2015-16 (15 goals, one every 170 mins).
The 2-2 draw with Tottenham was Burnley manager Scott Parker’s 75th Premier League match as a manager – only Mick McCarthy has picked up fewer points (48), fewer wins (11) and lost more games (49) than Parker in his first 75 matches (W12 D19 L44 – 55 points).
