What’s your opinion of the current trends in skateboarding, like light boards and tech skating?
It’s just the way it goes. Like back in the day big gnarlers like Pete Duffy, er Pat Duffy [to himself] who the ****’s Pete Duffy? Pat Duffy was doing ten stair handrails and as kids watch the videos it’s normal for them now and they see it as normal to go up and try and kickflip a ten-set and to be fair to them, quite a few of them are doing it which is really cool and it’s upped the sport but the trends for boards getting lighter, that’s always been trendy. Like when I was just skatin there was big baggy jeans, 45mm wheels, long, check-sleeve shirts and a baseball cap and that was the trend then and you had to make your board as light as possible, and then it went heavy and now it’s gone light again and the new titanium trucks have just come out by Grindking which are 80 bucks and for a set of trucks that’s outrageous but because they’ve got a titanium axle and kingpin, they’re really light.

What was the nastiest skating craze that you ever bought in to? Did you ever have any huuuge baggies?
Oh yeah! Like one of the shops in Dundee was doing the Puma Clydes and Puma States and Vision boots, but everybody wanted shoes and not boots so everybody cut the ankles off and turned them into shoes. And really, really baggy jeans made of heavy denim and it was almost like skating in flares. It was almost like wearing a skirt but they were more like blader's jeans where there’s enough jean for the boots to fit under.

If you could change one thing about the skating scene in Scotland, what would it be?
Less concentration on who’s getting sponsored and more on having fun. There’s like a huge thing at the moment of "Oh man! I’m a better skater than you!" or "You’re gay!" or "You suck!" and all the youngsters are being dead cliquey about it. And it’s weird because back in the day, if you seen somebody on a skateboard (well not even back in the day, it was just even ten years ago) you’d be like "Hey dude, you skate, cool!" and you’d have an instant affinity with each other, but nowadays there’s that many skaters you don’t even blink now if you see a skater.

Can you comment on your mobile’s answer machine message? Is that an alter-ego of yours?
[Laughs] It quite possibly could be. I was bored with the same old ****ing BT Cellnet thing so I got some Modest Mouse on the go and then just let it rip!
