Island Life, I know just how you feel, I too have been through the ringer, more times than I care to mention. I know what you are saying and it is awful. Personally, I feel that BBC Island Blogging is improving all the time, with friendships being made, with some lovely stories, and with help and support being offered to those who need it. Please, if ever you need to bend someone's ear, bend mine, I'm just like a rubber ball, and keep bouncing back !! take care and best wishes. Squidgy.

There is nothing wrong with having a good rant, I'm just about to do so. The people of Scotland and Lewis have had a long tradition of moving to find work. You will find Scottish connections all over the world. It is only reasonable for Scotland, and Lewis, to welcome people to support our aging and declining population.
Tormod from taking jobs from locals in a far of place.
Sorry someone tried to steal your MP3 player. I suspect Harris (or Lewis. How about Coll? and Luing?) is not crime free: if it were, would there be a need for a police force? and what would it do to the unemployment figures?!! # "Even with all these people that still think there are no foreign workers here taking an awful lot of local jobs. Do they not go outside?? " Island Life. For someone who complains about Harris residents being ten years behind the times (you may be right: I have no way of knowing), you don't seem to be extremely welcoming of "foreigners" (legal, I presume, and probably from the EU?)... though ironically you are an (seemingly unhappy) incomer yourself. # Anyway, chin up and cheer up: live and let live.

Island Life, I left a comment this morning, Tuesday, but it has not appeared as yet. But just to say, I know what you are saying. and best wishes. sorry if this is a duplicate.
Squidgy the Otter from Going into Blogashpere again
Gone missing my own unabashed under-appreciation of self-proclaimed modern (i.e. "not ten years behind" ...), worldly, "incomer" who nevertheless resent "foreign workers" (I assume legit. immigrants, probably from EU) "taking an awful lot of local jobs." Lots of British citizens go abroad to work: why should not the reverse hold? Perhaps a dose of consistency with one's tea might be indicated?
mjc from NM,USA
I'm sorry you are so upset but I hope getting it out there helps you a bit. I do appreciate your view as I always pictures things as idyllic. Hang in there friend.

Sometimes I worry that iB is just a sort of alternative therapy unit. Lock your door.
Flying Cat from here there and everywhere
i am not an incomer mjc as i have said before. i also have nothing against foreign workers and never said that i did (some are a big assest), also some locals are too lazy to do some of the jobs that these people come here to do be it a cleaner or a doctor... thank u greg for ur comment...it does help getting it out there....especially with some of the contributions that have been made in the coms!!
IL from still harris
thank you so much for your comment squidgy and also the offer of an ear to bend x
IL from harris
IL, I take note you are not an incomer, and in this regard I stand corrected.# I do not know whether Harris residents are lazier than most, or whether they simply spend too much time at the Kirk (as Calum. seems to think), but surely they are not too many locals in Harris qualified to be physicians and refusing to work because of laziness? I wonder where I could have gotten the idea that you did not look favorably on "foreign workers here taking an awful lot of local jobs" ...
mjc from NM,USA
I was just stating a fact mjc - regardless of what I seem to say you try to have a go. There are plenty here more intersted in the pub than doing a hard days work but there are also plenty that aren't scared of a hard days work. I have nothing against foreign workers and if thats what you got from what I said then you obviously read it wrong. I really am tired of feeling like I am being attacked by you in every comment you make. All I am doing is giving my perception on my own experiences. I don't ask you to read my blogs. My motto is 'whatever floats your boat fair enough' - that doesn't mean that I can't have a moan now and then! Last time I looked it was a free country. Well that could get me started on a whole other playing field...
IL from harris
I am sorry if I read you wrong re: foreign workers. # I would like you, and everybody else, to be happy. If a moan helps, that's fine. A moan on an BBC blog gets comments: you may moan, but you can't legitimately expect everyone to agree with everything you write. # As I have stated before, I hold no brief for those you criticize on Harris, and I readily sympathized with you regarding attempts by some to filch your property.# Of course you live in a free country, as I do, for which we should be thankful.
mjc from NM,USA
It is a free country of sorts Island Life: therefore you are free to rant and we are free to comment. Unlike a lot of other blogspaces, here we are moderated and unable to pull comments we take exception to, which I think is a good way to engender possibly forthright, but never offensive, discussion. Your comment about the foreign workers came over as ambiguous. Come and flyte on FC if you feel like it!!
Flying Cat from Miss Flyte's great expectations
Another comment of mine may well come back here but it is probably now doing the Tour de France, if not quite the Tour de Harris (and Lewis). I notice FC is taking all comers to its Rumble in the Jungle ("Jungle" here is covered by poetic license).
mjc from NM,USA
I tried to say something along the same lines as "MP3 for sale" but my post got moderated into the waste bin, probably because I compared Harris unfavourably with Glasgow in some respects. I do enjoy Island Life's posts, especially as her enthusiasm for her children remind me of how, a great many years ago, I felt the same way about mine. But I know people in Harris as well as Stornoway who, even if they were born there, have never lost the "foreign" tag and would have felt hurt and threatened by the comments about foreign workers.
Malkie from Glasgow
Ach, PC Murdoch, you are such a one !! give the lassie a wee break. But anyways, thank you PC Murdoch for lightening the mood and happy retirement to you !!
Squidgy the Otter from Isle of Coll
PC Murdoch?! Are you at it again, Calum.? How is Donald? He would not have some MP3s (iPods preferably) for sale now, would he?! Wasn't that Annie B. I spied recently jogging, with a pink colored nano?
mjc from NM,USA
thanks a lot for making light of the fact that I was 'mugged' mjc very thoughtful of you
IL from harris
The very first sentence in my first comment indicated that I was "sorry someone tried to steal your MP3 player." I did not realize you were mugged (at times wallets, cell phones, mp3s can be surreptitiously stolen). I AM sorry you got mugged. I can imagine it was a very unpleasant experience. # As to the banter with PC Murdoch, IF he is Calum., it is merely a continuation of a back and forth with him from his postings on his other blog, a bantering which goes on ceaselessly on various blogs involving a bunch of participants. But PC Murdoch may not be Calum. It was a wild guess. # Anyway, I am taking a leave from this discussion about Lewis/Harris. # Seriously, all the very best to you Island Life.
