Oscar nominees Cate Blanchett and Jennifer Hudson talk about Notes on a Scandal and Dreamgirls; Brian Cox on playing a 70s psychiatrist; and costume designer Sandy Powell on working with Derek Jarman.
Notes on a Scandal Francine Stock talks to the Australian actor Cate Blanchett. She and her co-star Judi Dench have both been nominated for Oscars for their roles in Notes on a Scandal, adapted from the novel by Zoe Heller. Cate Blanchett talks about the film, and why she's agreed to return to another critically-praised role: that of Elizabeth I. Notes on a Scandal (15) is out now.
Running With Scissors Francine meets Brian Cox, who's combined a distinguished career in the theatre with great success as a screen actor. In Running With Scissors, based on the memoir by Augustine Burroughs, he plays a psychiatrist in the 1970s. He talks about dysfunctional families and why the film didn't go down as well in the United States as he would have liked. Running With Scissors (15) is out now.
Derek Jarman As three films directed by the late Derek Jarman are reissued on DVD, Francine talks to one of his collaborators, the Oscar-winning costume designer Sandy Powell, about Jarman's visual style, and discusses why anachronisms are nothing to be scared of in period drama. Derek Jarman's films Caravaggio, Wittgenstein, and The Angelic Conversation are out now on DVD.
Dreamgirls Francine talks to the Oscar nominee Jennifer Hudson, who's enjoyed a meteoric rise since coming seventh in the reality TV show American Idol three years ago. In Dreamgirls she plays Effie White, a singer ditched from an all-female group because she doesn’t fit in with its image. She talks about her much-praised first venture into film. Dreamgirls (12A) is out now.
