Oscar nominee Peter O'Toole on Venus, beauty and his career; Julian Barnes discusses Patrice Leconte's film Ridicule; and the history of assassination films.
Peter O'Toole This week Peter O'Toole received his eighth nomination for an Academy Award, for his role as an ageing actor in Roger Michel's film Venus. Perhaps surprisingly, apart from an honorary award a few years ago, he's never won an Oscar. He talks to Francine Stock about a long and distinguished career on film. Venus (15) is out now.
Assassination films Emilio Estevez's film Bobby, released this week, is set in the hotel where the presidential hopeful Robert Kennedy was murdered in 1968. Francine is joined by the critic Jonathan Romney and the cultural historian Nick Cull to discuss assassinations on film, from The Manchurian Candidate to The Parallax View.
Bobby (15) is out now.
Ridicule Francine talks to the novelist Julian Barnes about Patrice Leconte's film Ridicule. Set in eighteenth-century France, it depicts a world in which the most important asset is one's wit - and the film won a Bafta award on its release ten years ago. Julian Barnes explains why he enjoys the film so much.
