Director Louise Osmond on the tragedy of sailor Donald Crowhurst; fantasy on the big screen; and Christopher Frayling on the year's best DVD box sets.
On The Film Programme this week:
Deep Water Francine Stock talks to Louise Osmond, one of the directors of the documentary Deep Water. The film tells the story of Donald Crowhurst, a weekend sailor who was the surprise competitor in the first round-the-world yacht race in 1969. His attempt ended in tragedy - but also in a degree of mystery. Louise Osmond explains why it's taken forty years for this extraordinary story to reach the screen.
Deep Water (PG) is out now.
Fantasy on Film Francine is joined by critic Kim Newman to talk about the fantasy genre as a new example reaches our screens. Eragon - about a farm hand and his dragon enlisted to fight an evil king - is a big-budget film clearly aimed at the same market as the Lord of the Rings trilogy. But what makes a great fantasy film?
Eragon (PG) is out now.
Christmas DVD box sets The film historian Sir Christopher Frayling makes his choice of this year's DVD box set releases.
His choices are:
The Audrey Hepburn Collection (Paramount Home Entertainment) The Powell and Pressburger Collection (ITV DVD) War and Peace (dir: Sergei Bondarchuk) (Artificial Eye) Tony Hancock Collection (Optimum Home Entertainment)
The West Wittering Affair Francine talks to brothers Danny and David Scheinmann about their debut feature - the comedy, The West Wittering Affair. Entirely improvised, the film was shot over three years on a minimal budget. They explain the difficulties of getting their first film made.
The West Wittering Affair (15) is out now on screens in Chichester, Cambridge and London.
