A special interview with Ronald Neame, the 95 year old senior statesman of British film, whose films include Brief Encounter, Great Expectations, Oliver Twist and The Poseidon Adventure.
On The Film Programme this week:
Francine Stock visits the Beverly Hills home of Ronald Neame, who has recently celebrated his 95th birthday. Neame discusses his long career that began in 1929 on the first British talking movie, Blackmail, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, his collaboration with David Lean that produced such classics as Brief Encounter, Great Expectations and Oliver Twist, the challenge of directing Judy Garland's final screen role in I Could go on Singing, his nurturing of acting talent such as Alec Guinness and Maggie Smith, and of course Shelley Winter's Oscar winning underwater dash in The Poseidon Adventure.
Ronald Neame's The Poseidon Adventure (PG) is out now on a special edition DVD. It is also on Five on Sunday 4 June at 4.25pm.
Wolfgang Petersen's remake Poseidon (12A) is out now in cinemas.
