Lesson 10
Having a baby - Dad's story

David: It transpired that she was having, what's called a backache labour, where the baby's spine was pressing on her spine, which was why it was particularly painful... And she was just saying to me: "Rub my back, rub my back...".

And so I was doing this endlessly for about 20 hours or more, in fact it was about 23 hours...

That was the first time Briley actually got any relief, 'cause they gave her some gas and air to tackle the pain.

And I remember, she was crying out, making an awful lot of noise and at one point some builders, who were working outside joined in, which was considerate of them.

And eventually, my daughter was born and it was the most extraordinary and incredible experience of my life. She was just this little grey and cinnamon coloured thing, covered in cream cheese, steaming.

And just the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in my life. And I just sobbed and sobbed my heart out for about 10 minutes... in, I suppose, the greatest joy I've ever experienced in my life.
