World Record Broken

A new Guinness World Record was set when 26,422 trees were planted by over 100 volunteers at Gransha Woods in Londonderry on Saturday December 5 2009 as part of 'Tree O'Clock'. A massive thank-you to all those involved who helped smash the previous record by 8000 trees.

We are still working out whether enough trees have been planted at the other locations across the UK to break a second World Record.

Conservation Volunteers in the Breathing Places garden at Gransha, DerryDerry

BBC Breathing Places joined forces with Conservation Volunteers NI and the Western Health Trust to break this single location tree planting world record and without all the volunteers on the day such an achievement could not have been made. A special thank you to Ivan Black of CVNI who along with his green fingered army made the amazing record attempt happen!

Alongside the ancient woodland at Gransha, a new wood has now been born at the back of the Waterside Hospital - a permanent Breathing Places legacy to the city.

BARONSCOURT

Baronscourt The beautiful landscape of Barounscourt, at the foot of the Sperrins near Newtownstewart saw 18 volunteers plant 700 trees inside one hour. Young and old came together on a cold and very muddy clearing to 'do their One Thing' for nature. Thanks to the generosity of the Duke and Duchess of Abercorn the land will now become a new BBC Pushkin wood; a place that everyone can visit and enjoy a true 'Breathing Place' for years to come. Alan Boyd from the Pushkin Trust said "The activity connected completely with the Trust's work as an educational charity which helps children and adults to express their creative voice through the senses, using the natural world and the arts." Oxford IslandAs Northern Ireland's Breathing Places Community for 2009, Craigavon Borough Council planted trees at two locations on Saturday 5th December. 15 very muddy volunteers helped plant 402 trees at Oxford Island Nature Reserve and 230 trees were planted by 20 volunteers at Lurgan Park. Hugh Thompson from Craigavon Borough Council said "It was great to have the chance to improve the biodiversity of native tree species in the woodland." FALLS PARK, BELFAST

Oxford IslandThe young members of the Ulster Wildlife Trust's 'Watch this Space' Saturday Club had a very successful hour of activity and planted 125 native trees at the Falls Park. They were assisted by some local members of the community who all joined in to break their own target of 100 trees planted in an hour. Lucille Coates from the Ulster Wildlife Trust said "The Tree O'clock event was a great success in Falls Park. The children, mums, dads and youth groups turned up and got stuck in - not even the mud could stop them! Thanks to Belfast City Council we had plenty of spades and a kind donation of trees kept everyone busy." To see a selection of pictures from this event then click here.
