Pete Sherlock

Assistant Editor: Shared Data Unit

Pete brings a passion for local content and an appetite to bring new ways of sourcing and telling stories to the role of Assistant Editor at the Local News Partnerships.

He started his career as a reporter for Newsquest on the Enfield Independent, and went on to work for Archant’s Hackney Gazette and the East London Advertiser.

He joined the BBC in 2010 and worked as an online reporter in the South East, before joining the English Regions HQ team two years later where he worked as a news and sub-editor on breaking stories.

In 2015, he was tasked with setting up a unit to provide innovative, data-driven content for the website. The unit went from strength to strength, producing a series of original news stories and features that resonated with the BBC’s online audiences.

Pete passionately believes that data journalism is breathing new life into journalism, playing a key role in informing citizens and holding those in power to account. It is also very fun. The trend towards open data and the free availability of tools for cleaning and analysing datasets has brought these techniques to the forefront of most newsrooms.

Away from wrangling spreadsheets, Pete can probably be found on the yoga mat, running the Birmingham canals, or watching movies.
