Alex Homer
Senior Data Journalist: Shared Data Unit
Alex helped launch the SDU in June 2017. He specialises in data journalism and Freedom of Information law and has previous experience as a BBC TV and radio producer, with his reporting leading some of the broadcaster’s flagship news programmes.
Before joining the BBC in 2014, Alex was a senior reporter and education correspondent for the six daily editions of the Midlands-based Express & Star newspaper. Alex is an ambassador for the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ); part of a BBC employee network that promotes social and economic diversity and he has also mentored other journalists and worked as an outreach volunteer in schools for the BBC News Young Reporter initiative.
His ability to manipulate data was first honed during a three-month BBC attachment in 2016 shining a light on the accounts of the 92 clubs in the Premier League and English Football League, manually entering 18,785 individual pieces of information to build a giant database.
Away from the office, Alex plays cricket, darts, football and hockey for fun.
