Western Approaches was set up to assist the convoys of ships during the Battle of the Atlantic.

The Battle of the Atlantic lasted for 2,073 days. It started when the liner Athenia was sunk of the coast of North West Ireland. During this time: Over 2000 Merchant ships were lost to a submarine attack in the North Atlantic.
Over 30,000 Merchant Seamen gave their lives.
About 330 convoys in the Atlantic were attacked by U boats.
565 escorted ships and 234 stragglers were sunk.
1100 ships proceeding independently were also sunk.
