Ayesha and Sam are sat working at the editing suite.

AYESHA: That’s great research, Sam?

SAM: You think?

Jo enters, full of energy and enthusiasm.

AYESHA: Yeah, brilliant, it’s going to be a really good lead story.

JO: What’s that?

AYESHA: First hand account of the fire at The Bull.

JO: Wait ‘til you see what I’ve got coming in – it’s brilliant.

SAM: What you got?

JO: Happy slapping – the stuff I’m getting, it’s awesome.

Rocco sits alone looking miserable. Ayesha approaches and sits with him.

AYESHA: I’ve just been looking at the pre-interview stuff from Sam. You should be proud. She’s a natural your sister.

ROCCO: Mm.

AYESHA: You don’t sound convinced.

ROCCO: I was in that fire, too.

AYESHA: And?

ROCCO: (getting heated) So why wasn’t I interviewed? Why didn’t anyone ask me about it before this interview? Am I not pretty enough?

AYESHA: Oh, come on, Rocco. You know what it’s like! A story’s a story –

ROCCO: Yeah – and I was in this one! (quieter) Not only that. I know more than her. She doesn’t know.

AYESHA: Doesn’t know what?

ROCCO: (now angry) She doesn’t know who set that fire! She doesn’t know who was so jealous and who couldn’t stand Jade not talking to him anymore and her mum not paying him any more money that he had to put a match to the place!

AYESHA: Do you know?

ROCCO: (quiet) Yes.

AYESHA: Have you got proof, Rocco?

ROCCO: No. But I’m going to get it.

Wavelengths: Episode one - Scene three

Jo is talking to a very nervous Kylie (14), who has a patch over her eye.

JO: So you were walking home from school…

KYLIE: Y.yyes.

JO: ….just like any other day.

KYLIE: Y.yyeah.

JO: …and what happened next?

KYLIE: I was hit.

JO: ….Where?

Kylie looks at Jo as if she is stupid. Kylie points at her eye.

KYLIE: …My eye. From behind.

JO: …Did it hurt?

KYLIE: Course it hurt…when I woke up. I was unconscious for 5 minutes; she had a bloody ring on! I’ve lost this eye you know!

JO: …good..no, er..I mean..right…and they filmed it all on her phone, didn’t they?

KYLIE: Yeah. It’s shaky but you could see all of the blood coming out of my eye socket. I know who did it, she’s being sentenced next month.

JO: So they passed the footage all round school?

KYLIE: Yeah. They were laughing all the way through. Don’t know why they picked on me, all I’ve got now is an empty socket….do you wanna have a look?

Kylie starts removing her bandages.

JO: No no….that’s OK, there’s no need.

Jo addresses the radio microphone directly.

JO: Well there you have it, the mindless brutality of happy slapping. No stop!

Kylie is just about to reveal her socket when the screen cuts to black.

JO: Eeeughhhh!

Sound of Jo retching.
