On today's episode we are exploring how screens affect our health
Before you listen/Pre-listening

- How many different screens do you look at in your day-to-day life?
- How can screens affect our behaviour? Is this positive or negative?
Listen to the audio and take the quiz.

Tejali
Hello! Listen Here!
Rob
I’m Rob. Have you seen my glasses?
Tejali
Rob
Come on! Everyone knows looking at screens is bad for you! I work with my computer monitor all day. That’s why I need glasses!
Tejali
Do you have any evidence to prove that? Maybe you’re just getting older!
Rob
Well, everyone says it, so it must be true!
Tejali
That’s not evidence! Rob, evidence needs to be factual.
Insert
A: We absolutely found evidence that higher levels of time on screens, digital screens, is linked with harms.
B: What? Depression, anxiety, obesity?
A: Particularly around obesity and overweight. And some evidence with mental health problems, particularly depression.
Rob
He says that screens can cause harms such as obesity and depression.
Tejali
Rob
So, screens can harm us by causing obesity and depression.
Tejali
Rob
Let’s keep listening to find out!
Tejali
Insert
In essence, what we found was that screens are linked with harms, but first, the way that screens cause harms is almost certainly through displacement of healthy stuff. Physical activity, sleep, diet, you know, a healthy diet, and ordinary, real human interactions. So, the things that have given us wellbeing for centuries, screens can displace them.
Rob
So, he says screens ‘displace healthy stuff’.
Tejali

But first, the way that screens cause harms is almost certainly through displacement of healthy stuff. Physical activity, sleep, diet, you know, a healthy diet, and ordinary, real human interactions.
Rob
So, physical activity, sleep and healthy diet. This stuff can all be displaced by screens.
Tejali
Rob
So, essentially, the doctor is telling us that it’s our behavior which is harmful to our health, because we aren’t doing important things – stuff like exercising, sleeping and eating healthily.
Tejali
Ah!
Insert
In essence, what we found was that screens are linked with harms.
Rob
‘In essence’! This means ‘essentially’ or ‘basically’. ‘Essence’ starts with a vowel sound, which connects the two words together phonetically. Practise the pronunciation with me.
ESSence
NESSence
i NESSence.
We could also say ‘in effect’ or ‘in England’.
Tejali
Do you feel more informed about the effects of screens and monitors on your health?
Rob
Oh yes. In essence, perhaps we need to monitor how we use monitors!
Tejali
Haha! A classic example of British humour there. Bye!
