James
Well that's a very good point! There are so many superhero films nowadays – it seems like there's a new one every month!

Tom
That's so true – you just can't seem to escape them!

लहानपणीचा शक्तिमान ते आत्ताचे अव्हेन्जर्स! सुपरहिरोंबद्दल आपल्याला नेहमीच आकर्षण वाटतं. पण हे का वाटतं? कुठून आले हे सुपरहिरो आणि आजच्या घडीला त्यांचं एवढं महत्त्व का आहे? या सगळ्याची उत्तरं शोधणार आहोत बीबीसी रेडिओच्या 'The Why Factor' या कार्यक्रमातल्या एका क्लिप मधून. याच्या पहिल्या भागात, हे सुपरहिरो नक्की कुठून आले याबद्दल स्पीकर काहीतरी बोलतायत. ग्रीक पुराणांमधे titan या संकल्पनेचा उल्लेख आढळतो. Titan म्हणजे प्रचंड शक्तीमान व्यक्ती, देवासारखी व्यक्ती.

Ahhh Tom! You just demonstrated today's language feature. You said myth – it sounds similar to one of the words the presenter used.

Mythम्हणजे मिथककथा किंवा दंतकथा. यासाठी इथे आणखी कुठला शब्द वापरला आहे ?

He said mythical, and I said myth – these are two forms of the same word. Myth is a noun, but mythical is an adjective. It ends with '-al', the sound is 'ul', which shows it is an adjective.

इंग्रजीमध्ये आपण शब्दाला प्रत्यय लावून तो शब्द बदलू शकतो. उदा. टॉम आणि जेम्सने '-al' प्रत्यय लावून नामापासून विशेषनाम तयार केलं. दुसरं उदाहरण– origin आणि originate. Origin हे नाम आहे, त्याला जेव्हा '-ate' हा प्रत्यय लागला तेव्हा ते क्रियापद झालं. आणखी एक उदाहरण पाहू - To fascinate म्हणजे मोहक, भारावून टाकणारं; हे क्रियापद आहे. त्यापासून fascination म्हणजे मोह, आकर्षण हे नाम तयार झालं.

Well, this fascinates me, but let's get back to our original topic – why are we fascinated by superheroes?

आता पुढची क्लिप ऐकूया – या क्लिपमध्ये आपल्याला सुपरहिरोंबद्दल एवढं का आकर्षण वाटतं त्याबद्दल काहीतरी म्हटलं आहे.

I think with superheroes, it's essentially, at the heart of it, it's morality tales. It's exploring good and evil and the blurring of those two things and the ways that we deal with those things. And looking at social justice and human justice in a way that's sort of larger than life and colourful, but at the heart of it is essentially about right and wrong.  

James
He gives two reasons for why we are fascinated with superheroes – firstly, they are larger than life.

त्यांचं 'Larger than life' म्हणजे भव्यदिव्य, चित्तवेधक असणं हे आपल्याला भावतं. अशी माणसं सर्वसाधारण माणसांपेक्षा वेगळी असतात, जास्त आकर्षक असतात.

Secondly, he said that superhero stories deal with morality, good and evil, right and wrong.

Tejali
Morality म्हणजे नैतिकता. So people like superheroes because they look at real world problems like social justice and talk about what is right and wrong. Social justice, म्हणजे सामाजिक न्याय.

James
Let's listen to the speaker again – how does he say 'with those'?

And I think with superheroes, it's exploring good and evil and the blurring of those two things and the ways that we deal with those things.

He said 'deal with those things'. Because 'with' ends with /th/ and 'those' begins with the same sound, we just say the sound once. Can you demonstrate that for us James?
