Why do young people feel so lonely?
In today's episode we listen to one theory which seeks to explain the record numbers of young people who report feeling lonely.
Before you listen (ऐकण्याआधी)
Consider the following questions:
• How often do you feel lonely?
• How can you describe the feeling of loneliness?
Listen to the audio and take the quiz.

Tejali
Hello!
Tom
Hi, I'm Tom!
Phil
Hi, I'm Phil. Today we're talking about loneliness.
Tejali
Phil
And they found that young people could feel more lonely than any other group of people!
Tejali
आजची क्लिप आहे बीबीसी रेडिओ 4 ची The Anatomy of Loneliness मधली.

Those younger people didn't just report a higrher frequency of loneliness but they also reported higher intensity of loneliness. And for me that kind of gives us a further clue about what might be going on over a life course.
Tom
She said that young people experience a higher frequency and a higher intensity of loneliness.
Tejali
Frequency म्हणजे वारंवारता. Intensity म्हणजे तीव्रता. Why didn't they say 'young people feel lonely frequently and intensely'?
Tom
Good question! 'A higher frequency of' and 'a higher intensity of' are used to create a noun phrase. This emphasises the main subject – loneliness.
Tejali
Insert
Those younger people didn't just report a higher frequency of loneliness but they also reported higher intensity of loneliness. And for me that kind of gives us a further clue about what might be going on over a life course.
Tom
She said 'a clue about what might be going on over a life course'.
Tejali
'Over the course of a lifetime'
Tom
So, over the course of a lifetime, people have a huge amount of experiences. They go to school, they go to work, they get married…
Phil
OK, OK – I think we're getting distracted here, Tom. Why do young people feel so intensely lonely?
Tom
I'll give you a clue. It's to do with that expression, 'the course of a lifetime'.
Tejali
Insert
I think, throughout your life course, you begin to realise, actually, this is a feeling that doesn't last forever, you're going to overcome it. But of course when you first experience it you don't know that. So, I think younger people are going to be experiencing loneliness more intensely because it's possibly the first time they've experienced it.
Phil
Interesting, she said that young people 'experience loneliness more intensely because it's possibly the first time they've experienced it'.
Tom
And that older people realise the feeling doesn't last forever, so they don't feel such a high intensity of loneliness.
Tejali
To last forever म्हणजे बराच काळ टिकून राहणे.
Tom
Precisely. Listen to the speaker again. How does she pronounce 'going to overcome'?
Insert
This is a feeling that doesn't last forever, you're going to overcome it.
Tom
She said 'to overcome'. Here, there's an extra sound, which is /w/.
Say it with me:
overcome
wovercome
to overcome
Another example is 'end'. We could say 'to end'.
Tejali
आज आपण loneliness, frequency, intensity, clue, overcome and over the course of a lifetimeहे शब्द शिकलो. Bye.
