Why does the weekend seem to go so quickly, while the weekdays go so slowly?
Before you listen (ऐकण्याआधी)
Consider the following questions:
• What activities seem to go fast for you?
• What activities seem to go slowly?
Listen to the audio and take the quiz.

Tejali
Hello ऐकलंत का? Listen Here!
James
And I’m James – welcome back!
Tejali
James, what makes time go very slow for you?
James
Well, when I’m taking a very long bus journey, time goes by so slowly. How about you?
Tejali
That used to happen to me also, specially
James
Yes! I’ve found that too – I wonder why certain activities make time move slowly?
Tejali
Presenter
John McCarthy was a British journalist taken hostage in Lebanon, in 1986. He was held for five years, which passed very slowly, yet, somehow, also flashed by.
James
How strange! The presenter said that John McCarthy’s five years in prison ‘flashed by’! If something flashes by, it goes very quickly!
Tejali
Five years in prison is very long time; it’s surprising that it flashed by!
James
Let’s listen to that sentence again. How does the presenter say ‘was’?
Presenter
John McCarthy was a British journalisttaken hostage in Lebanon, in 1986. He was held for more than five years.
James
The speaker said ‘was’ a weak form of was. He said ‘washeld’. Repeat after me.
was
was held
Tejali
Let’s continue to listen.
John McCarthy
I was in solitary confinement underground for 2 or 3 months, so no daylight. Suddenly, one would wake up one day and think, another month gone, just like *click* that.
Tejali
‘Just like *click* that'? What does he mean?
James
When something happens like *click* that, it happens very quickly or immediately.
Tejali
What verb does he use to say time moves slowly?
John McCarthy
It was extremely dull, and most of the time there was nothing going on, as indeed, often when one’s bored, time does seem to drag.
James
He said ‘time seems to drag’ – we can use the verb ‘drag’ when saying that time moves very slowly.
Tejali
Well, we don’t want time to drag for our listeners James, so let’s continue!
Claudia Hammond
We judge how much time has passed by how many new memories we can make within a certain time period. The more memories we’ve made that are new, the longer we assume that time was.
Tejali
James
Oh! I understand now! Our perception of time depends on how many new experiences we have! I wonder if there’s a way to slow time down?
Tejali
Slow time down म्हणजे काळाची गती कमी करणे. Good question James – I wonder if there is a way to slow time down so we can make the most of the day. Making most of the day
Claudia Hammond
One way of making time seem as if it slows down for you is to fill your time with lots of new activities and to not keep doing the same things again. Now there are some things you have to keep doing again and again like going to work, but any time you do get a choice, if you can spend your weekend filling it with loads of new activities, it will go fast at the time because you’re having fun.
Tejali
To fill your time
James
Well, there you have it! If you want to make the most of your weekends, you have to try lots of new things!
Tejali
I’ll do that James!
