Examples

I started primary school when I was 6.

I left high school when I was 18 to go to university.

I graduated from Manchester University and I got a degree in engineering.

I left secondary school when I was 16 and I went to college, where I got a certificate in business.

Yes, they used lots of different ways to talk about education. So let’s have a closer look!

ค่ะ เริ่มแรก มาทำความเข้าใจกับคำศัพท์ ที่หมายถึงสถาบันการศึกษาระดับต่าง ๆ ก่อนนะคะ ‘primary school’ ก็คือ ‘โรงเรียนประถม’ ‘secondary school’ คือโรงเรียนมัธยม หรือจะพูดว่า ‘high school’ ก็ได้นะคะ ส่วน ‘college’ ก็คือ ‘วิทยาลัย’ และ ‘university’ ก็คือมหาวิทยาลัยค่ะ

And what verbs did they use with these places? Let’s listen again – the verbs will come before the schools.

Examples
I started primary school when I was 6.
I left secondary school when I was 16 and I went to college.

OK มีคำว่า ‘started’ ที่แปลว่า ‘เริ่ม’
‘left’ ซึ่งในที่นี้แปลว่า ‘จากมา’ หรือเรียนจบนั่นเองค่ะ
และ ‘went to’ ในกรณีนี้แปลว่า ‘ไปเรียนที่’

And these verbs are all in the past simple. Shall we practise the pronunciation? Please repeat after me:

I started primary school when I was 6.

I left secondary school when I was 16…

…and I went to college.

และสังเกตว่า เราใช้ ‘to’ หลัง ‘went’ ด้วยนะคะ แต่ไม่ใช้ ‘the’ นำหน้าสถานศึกษา ฟังอีกครั้งนะคะ คราวนี้พยายามสังเกตว่าเขาพูดถึงคุณสมบัติของตัวเองอย่างไร และมีคำกริยาใดที่ได้ยินสองครั้ง?

I graduated from Manchester University.
I got a degree in engineering.
I got a certificate in business.

Did you hear it? The verb they used twice was ‘got’.

ใช่ค่ะ ซึ่งเขา ‘got a degree in engineering’ หรือ ‘มีใบปริญญาทางด้านวิศวกรรม’ และ ‘got a certificate in business’ แปลว่า ‘มีใบประกาศนียบัตรด้านธุรกิจ’
สังเกตไหมคะว่า หลัง ‘a degree’ และ ‘a certificate’ ต้องมี ‘in’ เพื่อระบุวิชาด้วย นอกจากนี้คำกริยา ‘graduated’ ที่เราได้ยิน คือรูปอดีตของ ‘graduate’ ที่หมายถึงเรียนจบแล้วนั่นเองค่ะ

And after ‘graduated’, it’s important to remember to use ‘from’ before the name of the place. Let’s practise saying these altogether. Repeat after me:

I got a degree in engineering.

I got a certificate in business.

I graduated from Manchester University.
