เริ่มด้วยการฟังเพื่อนชื่อลิวอิส พูดถึงอาหารที่มีอยู่ในตู้เย็นนะคะ

ฟังครั้งแรก ให้ลองเดาดูว่าลิวอิส น่าจะทำเมนูอะไรได้บ้างกับส่วนผสมที่มีนะคะ ส่วนคำศัพท์ตัวช่วย มีดังนี้ค่ะ: พริกหยวก ‘a pepper’, หัวหอม ‘an onion’, ชีส ‘cheese’, นม ‘milk’, ไข่ ‘eggs’, มะเขือเทศ ‘tomatoes’ และ แครอท ‘carrots’

There's a pepper and there's an onion. There's some cheese but there isn't any milk. There are some eggs and some tomatoes, but there aren't any carrots.

Yes! ไข่เจียว ‘an omelette’! คราวนี้มาทำความเข้าใจกับวลีที่ลิวอิส ใช้เพื่อบอกว่าในตู้เย็นมีอะไรบ้างค่ะ ฟังประโยคแรกอีกครั้งนะคะ เขาพูดอะไร ก่อน ‘a pepper’ และ ‘an onion’

There's a pepper and there's an onion.

ฟังทันไหมคะ? เขาใช้ ‘there’s’ ที่เป็นรูปย่อของ ‘there is’ ซึ่งเราจะใช้นำหน้าคำนามที่นับได้ในรูปเอกพจน์ เช่น ‘a pepper’ และ ‘an onion’
แม้จะประกอบด้วยคำว่า ‘there’ และ ‘is’ แต่เวลาพูดแบบธรรมชาติ อาจจะฟังเหมือนเป็นคำเดียวติดกันได้นะคะ

Great! ส่วนประโยคต่อไปที่ลิวอิสพูด เขาเปลี่ยน ‘there’s’ หรือเปล่าคะ?
There's some cheese but there isn't any milk.

คราวนี้ลิวอิสยังใช้ ‘there’s’ นะคะ แต่ใช้คำว่า ‘some’ หรือบ้าง ก่อนหน้า ‘cheese’ ซึ่งเราใช้ ‘some’ เพราะ ‘cheese’ เป็นคำนามที่นับไม่ได้ค่ะ

So we can't say 'a', like with 'a pepper' or 'an onion', and when you pronounce 'some' you usually say it very quickly. Let's practise together – repeat after me.

ต่อไปลิวอิสบอกว่า ‘there isn’t any milk’ ในตู้เย็นค่ะ
เขาใช้ ‘isn’t’ ตามด้วย ‘any’ ก่อนหน้า ‘milk’ ซึ่งเป็นคำนามที่นับไม่ได้

ต่อไปเป็นประโยคสุดท้ายของลิวอิส ฟังอีกทีนะคะว่าเขาใช้รูปเอกพจน์หรือพหูพจน์

There are some eggs and some tomatoes, but there aren't any carrots.

สังเกตทันไหมคะ ‘Eggs’, ‘tomatoes’ และ ‘carrots’ เป็นคำนามนับได้ และอยู่ในรูปพหูพจน์นะคะ ดังนั้นต้องเปลี่ยนตามหลักไวยากรณ์ด้วยค่ะ

Yes, we change 'is' to 'are', but we still use ‘some' and 'any'. Let's practise:

There are some eggs.
There are some tomatoes.
There aren't any carrots.

แบบฝึกหัดที่สอง ให้บอกว่า ไม่มีหัวหอม ‘onions’ ซึ่งเป็นคำนามที่นับได้นะคะ ดังนั้นจะพูดว่า ‘there isn’t any’ หรือ ‘there aren’t any’ ดีคะ
พูดแล้วเปรียบเทียบกับเฉลยจากแซมนะคะ:

พูดเหมือนกันไหมคะ Well done! ต่อไปให้พูดว่ามีนม ‘milk’ ซึ่งเป็นคำนามนับไม่ได้นะคะ ดังนั้นต้องใช้อะไรนำหน้าคะ ระหว่าง ‘a’ กับ ‘some’
