So we would predict based on our study that hugging in every society is right-dominated. Obviously, the prevalence of hugging, so how often it occurs in a society, that is extremely different across cultures. So there have been studies that Asian countries, for example, show much less hugging behaviour, or social touch in general, but nonetheless, if someone engages in a hug, it’s probably more right-dominated in general.

Typical! Right-handed people dominate everything. Again.

Sam
Oh, of course, you’re left-handed.

Tom
Yes, I’m left-handed. And my dad and my brother are left-handed, too. And I’m tired of the bias against left-handed people.

Do you really think that there is ‘a bias against’ ਪੱਖ-ਪਾਤੀ ਰਵੱਈਆ ‘people are biased against’- left-handed people? ਖੱਬੇ ਹੱਥੀਂ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਅਸੀਂ ਖਬਚੂ ਵੀ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪੱਖ-ਪਾਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।

Absolutely. I’ve felt it all my life. I think there’s a bias against us in everything from how desks and chairs are designed in schools to how…hugs are given, apparently.

Sam
It sounds like you think that being left-handed is an affliction, Tom.

Yes, it does. ‘An affliction’ ਇੱਕ ਤਕਲੀਫ਼/ ਦਰਦ ਹੈ. You can also ‘be afflicted by something’ ਕਿਸੇ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਦਰਦ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਣਾ।

Tom
Yeah , like a disease or an illness! I think it does feel like an affliction sometimes.

Sam
I don’t agree with that at all! I think left-handed people are special!

Tom
Special?

Sam
Yes, because there’s so few of you in the world!

I don’t know the exact number, but I know that it’s low. And I also know that, being left-handed is associated with high levels of intelligence.

Well, of course I agree with that!

Sam
I thought you might! But it’s true – left-handed people are associated with being good at maths, for example.

And the number of left-handed people who become Nobel Prize winners and presidents is disproportionately high.
