મિત્રો, આજે અમે ચર્ચા કરીશું કે તમે કોઈ દ્રશ્યનું વર્ણન અંગ્રેજીમાં કઈ રીતે કરશો. દ્રશ્ય એટલે  બારીમાંથી તમે જોઈ શકતા હોવ એ અથવા તો તમે જ્યાં રહો છો એ જગ્યા અથવા તો કોઈ જગ્યાની મુલાકાત. હવે માર્ક આપણાં માટે એક ફોટાનું વર્ણન કરશે. બરાબરને સેમ?

Yes, he’s going to describe a photograph he took last year.

પ્રેઝન્ટર
Ok! તમે માર્કને સાંભળો અને નક્કી કરો કે એ જે ફોટોનું વર્ણન કરે છે એ કઈ જગ્યાનું છે. તમારા મદદ માટે શબ્દો છે ‘mountains’ એટલે ડુંગરો, ‘lake’ એટલે નદી અને ‘field’ એટલે ખેતર.

‘I see mountains in the background and a lake in the foreground. I see some trees at the bottomof the mountains but none at the top. On the left of the lake, I can see a field. Next to the field, I can see a house.’

Wow, that sounds beautiful! Is it England?

Very close! Mark told me it was Scotland.

પ્રેઝન્ટર
ફોટોમાં વિશે માહિતી આપવા માટે માર્ક અલગ-અલગ શબ્દસમૂહનો ઉપયોગ કરે છે. મિત્રો, ફરીથી સાંભળો ને જાણો કે માર્ક કઈ રીતે પોતાની વાતની શરૂઆત કરે છે.

‘I see mountains in the background and a lake in the foreground.’

પ્રેઝન્ટર
અહીં માર્ક ‘in the background’  અને ‘in the foreground’ નો ઉપયોગ કરે છે.  ‘In the background’ એટલે ચિત્રનાં પાછળનો ભાગ જ્યારે ‘in the foreground’ એટલે ચિત્રનાં આગળનો ભાગ. આ નિશ્ચિત બ્દસમૂહો છે, બરાબરને સેમ?

Yes, so it’s always ‘in’, not ‘on’ or ‘at’, like with some of the other phrases I used. Let’s quickly practise – repeat after me:

‘in the background’

‘in the foreground’

પ્રેઝન્ટર
આના બાદ માર્ક ઝાડ વિશે જણાવે છે. Let’s listen again:

‘I see some trees at the bottom of the mountains but none at the top.’

પ્રેઝન્ટર
તો આપણે ‘at the bottom’ અને ‘at the top’ સાંભળ્યું. ગુજરાતીમાં ‘at the bottom’ નો અર્થ થાય છે તદ્દન નીચેના ભાગે અને ‘at the top’ એટલે સૌથી ઉપરના ભાગે. સેમ, શું આ શબ્દસમૂહોનો ઉપયોગ દ્રશ્યો વિશે વાત કરવી હોય ત્યારે જ કરી શકીએ?

Oh, no! For example, my bedroom is at the top of the stairs, and the kitchen is at the bottom of the stairs. Notice that I said ‘of’ before ‘stairs’. Shall we practise? Repeat after me:

‘at the bottom’

‘at the top’

Great! મિત્રો, હવે સાંભળો કે માર્ક કઈ રીતે અંગ્રેજી શબ્દ ‘on’ નો ઉપયોગ કરે છે.

‘On the left of the lake, I can see a field.’

પ્રેઝન્ટર
તો આપણે સાંભળ્યું ‘on the left of’ એટલે કે પૂર્વ દિશા તરફ. દિશા વિશે વાત કરતી વખતે આ ઘણી વખત આ શબ્દસમૂહનો ઉપયોગ કરવામાં આવે છે.

…and the opposite is, of course, ‘on the right of’. Quick practice! Repeat after me, please:

‘on the left of’

‘on the right of’

And what did Mark say at the end? Let’s listen again:

‘Next to the field, I can see a house.’

પ્રેઝન્ટર
સેમ તમે કહ્યું ‘next to’ એટલે કે બાજુમાં.

For example, I’m sitting next to the door at the moment. Let’s say that together - ‘next to’ sounds more like one word. Repeat after me:

‘I’m sitting next to the door.’

પ્રેઝન્ટર
Thanks, Sam. મિત્રો, આજે તમે જાણ્યું કે કોઈ દ્રશ્યનું વર્ણન અંગ્રેજીમાં કઈ રીતે કરી શકાય. હવે સમય થયો છે અભ્યાસ કરવાનો. હું એક ફોટાનું વર્ણન કરીશ અને તમે અંગ્રેજીમાં જવાબ આપો. તો પ્રશ્ન છે ‘I see a house in the foreground’. તો મિત્રો, શું ‘in the foreground’ આવશે કે પછી ‘in the background’? જવાબની શરૂઆત ‘I see…’ થી કરો. પોતાનો જવાબ સેમનાં જવાબ સાથે સરખાવો.

પ્રેઝન્ટર
સરસ! હવે અંગ્રેજીમાં કહો તમે ઘરની ડાબી બાજું ઝાડને જોઈ શકો છો. જવાબ આપતી વખતે શું ઉયોગ કરશો ‘on the left of’ કે પછી ‘on the right of’?

I see a tree on the left of the house.

પ્રેઝન્ટર
Well done! હવે અંગ્રેજીમાં કહો કે તમે ઝાડની ઉપર એક પક્ષીને જોઈ શકો છો. તો ‘at the top of’ નો ઉપયોગ કરશો કે પછી ‘at the bottom of’ નો? અંગ્રેજીમાં પક્ષીનો અર્થ થાય છે ‘bird’.

I see a bird at the top of the tree.
