YMCA FC Round Up

By Lozz Rose
Latest news from the YMCA FC including match reports from the U11s, U12s, U13s and U14s...

UNDER 9s:

YMCA’s Under 9s play their final league fixture of the season next Saturday 6 May when they take on Spirit Of Youth at Seafield Rd (10.30am) knowing that if they can claim 4 of the 6 points they will clinch the champions of the PDPL Div 1A.

If they fail to take at least 4 points the title will go to neighbours Lytham Juniors.

YMCA 6 FLEETWOOD GYM 0

YMCA opened strongly and put immediate pressure on Gym in this game switched to Boundary Park. Tom Broderick opened the scoring for YMCA from an Oliver Drury pass. Harrison Kenworthy made it 2-0 from a Jack Burton corner and then slotted in his 2nd from a fine cross from Tom Broderick following an excellent individual run. Mathew McGlaughlin made an excellent save to keep the visitors out and just before half-time Oliver Drury created a chance for Burton to increase YMCA’s lead to 4-0 at the break. After the restart Broderick notched his second goal of the game before Kenworthy deservedly completed his hat trick. Mathew Ridgeway was outstanding in defence and Liam Robinson tackled tirelessly in midfield.

UNDER 12s:
FLEETWOOD GYM 3 YMCA 1

The first half of this encounter at Broadwaters last Sunday was a hard fought affair but the home side edged into a 1-0 lead at the break. YMCA continued to display good spirit but could prevent Gym from adding two more goals with Matthew Carlisle claiming a consolation. YMCA’s regular ‘keeper was away on holiday but stand-in Danny Neil had an excellent game between the posts.

UNDER 13s:
YMCA 1 BLACKPOOL RANGERS 3

Rangers ran out winners in this game transferred to the Bispham Gala Field last Sunday. There was nothing to choose between the two teams in the first half but Rangers broke the deadlock and reached the interval 1-0 ahead. It remained evenly balanced after the restart and YMCA drew level with a strike by Rob Nunnen. However, the longer the game went on the more dominant Rangers became in midfield which led to them adding two goals and run out deserved winners. Lloyd Patton and Adam Levine both impressed for YMCA and there was a welcome return to action by Sam Slack following a two-month lay off with a head injury caused by a cycling accident.

UNDER 14s:
CLIFTON RANGERS 0 YMCA 2

YMCA brought the curtain down on their season with an excellent victory at Stanley Park. The hard bumpy pitch was difficult for both teams but Rangers adapted better in the 1st half and YMCA ‘keeper Tom Sharples was called upon to make several fines saves. It remained 0-0 at the break but YMCA began to impose themselves more on the game after the interval and they eventually broke the deadlock midway through the 2nd half. A long ball was headed on by James Gardiner which sent Taz Moxon clear and he calmly lobbed the ball from 25yds over the advancing ‘keeper into the net with an exquisite side-foot volley. YMCA sealed the issue in the closing minutes when Gardiner netted his 46th goal of the season from close range.

  • Two YMCA teams are losing finalists...

Two YMCA teams took part in prestigious tournaments over the May Bank Holiday Weekend and both reached their respective finals. In a 2-day tournament staged at Seafield Rd by LSA YMCA in conjunction with Weymouth based SCI Soccer Festivals YMCA Under 9s battled through to the final but were a little unlucky to lose 1-0 to top Merseyside outfit Crosby Stuart.

Clubs from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle, Central Lancs, the Midlands and Merseyside were amongst the participating teams.

In a 1-day festival run by the Lancashire FA for Charter Standard clubs at their Leyland headquarters our Under 10 reached the final but lost against Ladybird Crusaders, also 1-0.
