UNDER 11s: Hogan Cup 2nd Round - ST ANNES FC 0 YMCA 1 This was a closely fought quarter final cup tie played in blizzard conditions at St Annes on Sunday in which YMCA came out on top. First half chances were few, with the St Annes keeper saving well from Harrison Kenworthy and Ryan Allan shooting just wide with the rebound. YMCA dominated the second half and were unfortunate not to take the lead with efforts from William Nash, Henry Hargreaves and Tom Broderick. The deadlock was finally broken when Allan latched onto a through ball to score from close range. Oliver Drury was unlucky with a low down shot that was well saved and a free kick that was just over the bar. Allan nearly doubled his account when his shot hit the inside of the post. UNDER 12s: SPIRIT OF YOUTH 1 YMCA 1 YMCA fully deserved a share of the points in this even encounter at a cold and blustery Common Edge Road last Sunday. On the back of some good recent performances YMCA immediately took the game to Spirit and were close to taking the lead within the first 20 minutes but were thwarted by the home ‘keeper who pulled off a couple of fine saves. Further YMCA pressure followed with some excellent football despite the difficult weather conditions but Spirit remained resolute in their defending. Similarly the YMCA defensive unit of Daniel Farran, James Rowbotham, Joe Virco, David Mitchell and keeper Joel Kilgallon were outstanding throughout and hardly gave Spirit a chance at goal. It stayed 0-0 at the break but early in the second half YMCA failed to clear a corner and they were made to pay with Spirit taking the lead. YMCA though continued to display great spirit and an excellent free kick from Jack Hellon 5 minutes from time caused panic in the Spirit area which resulted in a home defender poking the ball into his own net for a deserved YMCA equaliser. This is now three games undefeated for YMCA and they can take heart from a recent improvement of performances UNDER 13s: WYRE THORNTON 1 YMCA 5 YMCA were always in control of this game last Sunday against strugglers Wyre. Ben Cudworth gave them an early lead which was soon doubled with a strike by Rob Nunnen. As YMCA continued to dominate they increased through a bizarre own goal from 40yds. In the 2nd half the outstanding Nunnen notched his 2nd goal of the game with Josh Walker, who also impressed, adding to the score making it 5-0 with the home side claiming a late consolation goal. Sam Slack and Joe Kennedy were also notable. UNDER 14s: YMCA 0 SOUTH SHORE 6 The margin of this defeat at Seafield Rd last Sunday was a little cruel on YMCA. Despite the formidability of the visitors, league and cup winners for the past 5 season and having not dropped a point so far in this campaign, YMCA took the game to them in spirited fashion and forced six corners in an end-to-end first half and carved out a few half chances also. However, on the stroke of half time Shore snatched a goal out of nothing to send them into half time 1-0 ahead. YMCA started the 2nd half brightly as well but the overall strength of Shore eventually began to tell as they hit three more goals in a 10-minute spell then scored twice more in the closing minutes. UNDER 15s: SPIRIT OF YOUTH 1 YMCA 2 There was an explosive start to this encounter at Common Edge Rd last Sunday. YMCA took the lead in the first 20 seconds, new signing Ryan Ayrton on his club debut putting them ahead. However, this lead didn’t last long because Spirit were level again with a goal just 90 seconds later to make it 1-1 only 2 minutes into the game. YMCA almost regained the lead when a Sam Turnock effort struck the woodwork but they did take 2-1 lead into half time when a Spirit defender deflected a YMCA corner kick into his own net. The 2nd half remained a hard fought encounter but YMCA put up a gutsy display in the difficult blustery conditions and an uneven pitch to hold on to their lead until the end. ‘Keeper Rick Horrocks and defenders Jack Mellor, Liam Smith and Dan Stones all impressed in this hard earned YMCA victory. UNDER 17s: LYTHAM JUN 0 YMCA JUN 3 Credit goes to both teams for an entertaining local derby at Lytham last Sunday. YMCA always had the edge but the home side competed well throughout and make their neighbours work hard for their victory. YMCA took the lead through Joe Ormond and they made it 2-0 by half time with a strike by Arron Kitchin. It remained a hard fought encounter after the restart but YMCA sealed the issue by notching a 3rd goal with a fine header from the outstanding Craig Davies. Also impressive for YMCA was Mattie Hardman who worked tirelessly in midfield. UNDER 17s: Hogan Cup 2nd Round - YMCA 3 FOXHALL 2 The visitors were lively throughout this Hogan Cup tie at Seafield Rd last Sunday but YMCA managed to clinch a semi-final place with a hard working and gutsy display. Henry Wright put YMCA ahead against the run of play but Foxhall deservedly scored the leveller ro make it 1-1 at half time. After the restart YMCA had to thank ‘keeper Mark Wells for keeping them on level terms as he pulled off a string of fine saves, then again against the run of play YMCA regained the lead through Ashley Walsh who spectacularly powered home a 30yd free kick. 5 minutes from time the visitors equalised and the game looked all set for extra time. However, with just 2 minutes remaining YMCA grabbed a dramatic winner when another dangerous free kick by Walsh was headed home by Adam Parkinson. Wells and Callum Chadderton were both outstanding in a spirited YMCA display. - The views expressed on this page are those of the contributor and the opinions expressed are not necessarily those of the BBC.
