Voices: Turning words into action
St Martin's schoolVoices - week 01

This page will update you on the most recent developments in the Voices project.

ST MARTINS
We've been blasting ahead with the school grounds make-over - bothering people for materials and being very taken with the kindness of timberyards and BBC Radio Derby listeners in helping us out. Bat boxes will be next! And if you've got some little bats that would like a studio outing give us a call. We're hoping to do a session with a bat expert on Shane O'Connor's show, and invite pupils from St Martin's to come and learn to be bat monitors!

Otherwise digging's been done, paving laid, pergolas benches and archways are in construction at the Probation Service workshop, and interim site visits have led to much stroking of chins and the odd bit of re-jigging.

We've commissioned two audio-diaries from members of staff, and planned workshops and station visits for the pupils.

Also the Prince's Trust group have started their assualt on finding books and materials for the library. You may have heard some of them, as Frances Finn had a daily guest on her lunchtime show.

The Derby Playhouse has invited pupils along to their latest production, in recognition of their increasing emphasis on drama, with the help of the University of Derby drama department.

And there's talk in the English department of a radio play.....more on that later. You might also have heard the headteacher Phil Ormerod as Shane O'Connor's coffee-break guest.

BOOTH STREET FC
John Foy is still working away to mould his football club members into Sunday league players. You'll remember the under 10's have already found sponsors in Derby Loans.

We were intrigued to find that Tom Kellogg, who works to improve sporting skills and opportunities in Derby, is working alongside John to see whether the older members of the club could be moulded into a suitably lethal Sunday league force.

It turns out that Tom also coaches some of st Martin's pupils - in swimming. So, we may well go and splash about with them shortly and find out more on both fronts.

If your firm or organisation would like to have your ensignia blazoned on the backs of some promising players just email or give us a call on 01332 370707. A little sponsorship would go a long way. We'll be inviting some of them in to meet you on Saturday's Kick-Off in the near future.

SOUTHGATE COMMUNITY CENTRE

Andy Griffiths is still slightly shell-shocked from the number of folk who came along to the open-day/launch at the beginning of the month. He has, though, been writing to everyone who signed in that day, and canvassing ideas and preferences as well as making sure that everyone knows what goes on in the centre.

He's still anxious to get you off out in minibuses this summer - and to lay on extra sessions at the centre, particularly for BBC Radio Derby listeners (well we've just shown him how classy they are...).

We've also begun to do a spot of research on the building itself - which was once a boys school (with St Martins now occupying the girls school site). More on that as we discover... In fact, we've been raising our eyes a bit and trying to get a fix on the history of Alvaston - especially the old semi-rural village of Alvaston.

So, again, if you can help us with that you'll be pleasing not only us, but the local studies library who are trying to increase their archive. They are really keen to hear your memories of the old Carnegie library, as the new one is poised to open. A book is promised.

Our actiondesk line: 01332 370707 for any of your musings!
