Misty mornings and mixed nights

It’s been a bit of headache forecasting the weather this week with the remains of a tropical storm throwing a spanner in the works on Wednesday. There was always a question mark and some uncertainty about exactly how much rainfall we would see and how far north and west the heavy rain would spread. A weather warning was issued but the heavy rain missed Wales on Wednesday and stayed on the other side of the Severn Bridge affecting parts of south and south east England.

The low pressure has now moved away towards Norway taking the unsettled weather with it. A trough of low pressure will bring showers on Friday but then high pressure over the Atlantic will move across the UK settling the weather down over the weekend.

Met Office weather chart for Friday 18 September

Thursday evening will see a few showers in south and south east Wales, elsewhere most places should remain dry. However, some showery rain will spread south into mid and north Wales overnight and this may be quite heavy in places. The lowest temperatures for Thursday night will drop to between 8 and 12°C.

Friday will bring more showers and some of them will be heavy with a risk of thunder. There will however also be some dry weather and sunshine likely as the showers will ease later in the afternoon bringing about a fine evening. Top temperatures will reach 15 to 18°C with a light to moderate breeze. Friday night will be dry and with the sky becoming clear it will turn chilly with a few mist and fog patches forming.

On Saturday morning, mist and fog patches will lift leaving a fine and settled day with a mixture of patchy cloud and sunny spells. Temperatures will recover reaching 16 to 19°C. The light and variable winds mean it should feel pleasantly warm.

Sunday will bring more dry and bright weather, some sunshine and light winds. However, a little rain and a freshening wind may reach the far west by evening. Highs on Sunday will reach 15 to 18°C with a south to south westerly breeze.

If you’re travelling to Cardiff for the rugby on Sunday, the roof of the stadium will be closed but the weather will be fine with a mixture of cloud and some sunshine. The temperature will rise to 17°C with just a light breeze.

Next week, some rain is expected on Monday with showers on Tuesday. Wednesday should be dry with signs of high pressure heading our way later in the week. At the end of September into early October there continues to be a signal for dry, settled weather in general with a likelihood of blocked conditions and high pressure but with relatively low confidence at this stage.
