Scarlett Mullen is a brassy, streetwise survivor. Always quick with a witty line or cutting put-down, Scarlett is a great laugh down the pub, but behind Scarlett's good-time-girl front lies one of the quickest brains in Shieldinch, a lion's heart and a lot of wisdom learned the hard way. Principled and loyal, Scarlett takes no nonsense or prisoners when it comes to those she loves, especially her family.
Scarlett's loved by almost everyone, not least of all her adoring family. All four of her kids would do anything for Scarlett, and her man can deny her nothing. In spite of this Scarlett has a secret niggling feeling that she's not good enough. Before Jimmy, Scarlett had little luck with men. First husband, Paddy, was an abusive bully. Over the years Scarlett's built up her defences and her mask is impressive. When your heart is as soft as Scarlett's you've got to make sure your armour is chink-proof.
Scarlett didn't have the happiest childhood. Her family were never flush and her scruffy clothes, combined with the fact she was unable to read or write, meant she was teased at school. The experience left Scarlett with feelings of inadequacy she's never quite managed to shake. Scarlett's first marriage to Paddy resulted in three kids; Stephen, Kelly-Marie and Bob. The marriage finally ended when Paddy was jailed. Scarlett was left alone to keep the family together and, though it wasn't always easy, she managed. When Paddy was released from jail he came to reclaim his wife and almost succeeded before Bob saw him off.
No stranger to a bit of dodgy dealing, Scarlett had a successful line in dodgy DVDs, a business she ran with Jimmy Mullen. Unable to return Jimmy's love for her, Scarlett chased several unattainable men. In a drunken moment she succumbed and slept with Jimmy. Scarlett immediately rejected lovesick Jimmy but their brief dalliance resulted in baby Madonna. When Jimmy was involved in a serious accident the prospect of losing him made Scarlett see that her feelings for him ran deeper than she'd previously thought. Scarlett nursed Jimmy back to health and the pair finally married in summer 2008.
Though it's been a rough ride for Scarlett, the journey she has been on has left her stronger and more firm about who she is more than ever before. It's just as well, because, she needs to draw on all of that strength and more in an attempt to deal with the biggest nemesis in her life, her mother Molly.
Scarlett turned her life around since coming to Shieldinch and she hopes to help her soft-hearted brother, Bob, do the same. Dark secrets rose to the surface when Scarlett's sister, Theresa, arrived in Shieldinch. So how will Scarlett cope under the pressure of the biggest secret she's had to keep her whole life?
