Che - che- che- changes...
So as you may or may not know, the Radio 1 specialist schedule has been changed resulting in a different timeslot and a slightly different music policy for my show. In a few months time, I'll be moving to Friday nights on Radio 1 and playing the best of dance music and indie music in 'Annie Mac's mixtape'. I'm really happy to be moved to a Friday as I always thought that our show was much more suited to the weekend and I'm happy to be able to branch out into Indie music aswell. I love indie music, I love covering for Zane on his show and I think with the right programming and love and care put into the tracklists, this new show can be something really really special.I've already had some distressed messages about the fate our our beloved minimixes. I can't promise anything yet but I think the minimix is one of the best things that the Thursday night show has to offer and I'd like to think it could translate to Friday's easily.. Bloc Party minimix anyone?
What do you reckon?
facepaints and petrol stations...
It's Monday.I got in at 5am this morning after a little adventure to Cambridge where I played the Fez Club last night. Myself, Rachel from the show and our mate Reju came very close to getting stuck in a Cambridge suburb with no petrol at 3am. But we found a station just in the nick of time. Props have to go to Reju who rang directory enquiries and asked 'Can you put me through to someone who can tell me where I am?'. And thank you to the nice lady who directed us to the petrol station.
I've been covering Sara Cox's show over the weekend while she's on holiday. Doing weekend radio is quite different to Thursday nights, it feels like the whole country is listening in and it was exciting on sunday with the lead up to the match. Shame about the dullness of the match though. I'm really enjoying the world cup at the moment, did you see the Portugal V Holland game last night? The drama! The sweat! the passion! the yellow cards!! Brilliant.
Saturday night I had a face paints party in my house. Reju has a dark past, which includes being an accomplished face painter and she brought some books so everyone could choose an idea. I had a big butterfly on my face, but there was all sorts of fantastic creations, Adam Ant, a Flava Flav clock face, a tiger, Spiderman, a masked beauty, Ziggy Stardust and a member of Kiss where all hanging out in my flat.. it was alot of fun.
So tonight and until Thursday myself and Nihal are covering for Zane's show. Then on Thursday Tayo is taking over my show for a night. He'll be doing his own minimix so you can see what he's all about musically...
Did you all have good weekends? Any good festivals or parties?
Friday morning..
Thanks again for your input last night... how about the Max sedgely minimix then? it was pretty much perfect wasn't it? Don't forget you can use our brand new button, the 'listen again to the minimix' button. Which means you can listen to those 5 minutes for the next 7 days. You can still listen to the show though if you need a longer fix!
Have spent the last few days in the studio putting the finishing touches on my compilation album. I'll be really happy when its finished and it won't be long now. After my hectic weekend last weekend, this time I am looking forward to, well, another hectic weekend. Tonight I am going to the Wireless festival in Hyde Park, to see Gnarls Barkely, DJ Shadow, Pharell, Massive Attack, and Flaming Lips and tomorrow and Sunday I am filling in for Sara Cox on her afternoon shows. Tomorrow night I'm having abit of a house party and sunday night I'm DJing at the Fez club in Cambridge..
Hope you all have lovely weekends... i think the sun's gonna come out in London..yay!
It's gonna be a BRIGHT BRIGHT SUNSHINEY SHOW.
even if it's bucketing down with rain outside. We will endeavour to do our best in making you feel like you are lying on the beach with a cocktail and it's all good.
keep your suggestions coming in! you've got 24 hours!!
x
Top Weekend.
wow. thanks for all your sunshine suggestions for this week. There is a dark cloud hanging over Battersea (where I live) today so it's nice to think about sunshine, while it's (hopefully only temporarily) disappeared.
Am delighted this morning. I've had quite a nerve wracking weekend and I feel great that it's all gone without a hitch.
It began in Fabric on Friday, for my latest Annie Mac Presents night. Rachel from the show played and then Christopher Just (of Popper fame) played. He was the nicest man you could ever meet, he even brought us a box of chocolates from his native Austria! He played great and gave me loads of his new stuff which I'm looking forward to getting into. Then I played. I was drunk at this stage and played a messier, less cautious set than I'd normally play and it was fun. Digitalism played after me but I had to go home after half an hour as the rest of the weekend was hanging over my head..
Saturday we headed off to Portrush for The Beach Party 2006. Jon Carter and The Audio Bullies where on our flight and we all got in a car to Portrush. I went straight on when we got there and played to a few thousand very up for it people..my set was over in a flash and as always I wondered why I'd worried so much about it. I had my first ever dressing room and a massive rider and my fella and I made it our mission to get through it all by the end of the day. I met Norman Cook who was as lovely as I thought he'd be and it was amazing to watch his show by the side of the stage. He played to 20 thousand people which was nothing for him as he's been playing shows like this to half a million people in South America and Japan. The visuals were fantastic and he played a few tunes that I wasn't expecting him to play, like The Hustle by Simian Mobile Disco and this Richard Dinsdale tune that I've been playing out alot. It was all over at 11pm and I declined offers of going to see Linus Loves play at LUSH so I could get a decent night's sleep before my Top Of The Pops debut ths following day.
I got to the stage door at 3.30pm. Again I had a dressing room this time with a lit up mirror and a massive box of krispy kreme doughnuts to get through. I was worried I wouldn't fit into my dress by the time we had our dress rehearsal! It was all good though, Reggie Yates (Friday early breakfast on Radio 1 and regular TOTP presenter) was really nice to work with. The show was completely live and it went in a flash. The line up really impressed me, there was Muse, Guillemots (who killed it),Ray Lamontagne and The Frattelis live in the studio. After the show finished Busta Rhymes was due to come in and record a performance for the following week. I walked past him in the corridor on the way back to my dressing room. He was on his own chatting on his mobile, and all I heard him say was 'I love you Daddy'.
It's nice to know that even Busta Rhymes doesn't forget Father's day.
the sunshiney show...
Whoop Whoop! the summer is definitely, without a doubt, upon us. And to celebrate.. next week we are doing a Summer show.. 2 hours of music fully, one hundred per cent, dedicated to SUNSHINE.
Again, for all our themed shows, we need YOUR help. What songs do you think of when you think of the beach, festivals, ice creams, parks, picnics, carnivals or anything Summery like that? Off the top of my head I'm thinking Roy Ayers - Everybody Loves The Sunshine, I'm thinking Beats International - Dub Be Good To Me, I'm thinking Max Sedgely - Happy... do you get me? Well let's have your suggestions please!
CE SOIR...
Tonight's show as always is going to be ace and hopefully I will be broadcasting to a nation of happy celebratory people after England's second game today.. We have the mighty Drumsound And Bassline Smith in the minimix and tracks from Sunkids - Rise Up, the brilliant new Coburn, carnival D&B from Wickaman, and my new favourite track by a mile , Promiscuous Woman by Nellee Furtado and Timbaland. It is so amazing.
Ladies Rave weekend...
Tuesday morning and it's rained all night.. it was getting a bit hot.. The weekend was a great success..we left on Friday afternoon and made Newcastle in good time...I played the main room but only had a limited amount of time so played for just over an hour and then Xavier from Justice headlined. He is the most incredible DJ, he plays with battered vinyl and is fearless and fast in his style.. he brings the record in, roughly in time and then fixes it while it's in the mix. He only plays a few minutes of every record meaning you never get bored. And the music is everything you could expect from a Justice DJ set, really raw and grimey but full of disco moments.
The next day we spent a very sunny afternoon on the beautiful Newcastle quayside, watching the football and taking in the fantastic architecture. The building The Sage, is my new favourite building. After the footie we drove to Leeds and entertained ourselves by doing tricks with our hair in the back of the car.. (check out the photos). We got to Leeds and had a disco map, had dinner and hit club number 2 of the weekend. It's called The Northern Lights and it was one of the best clubs I've seen in the UK. 3 big rooms and a courtyard, the main room was all brick and metal, with the DJ booth made out of scaffolding. It had a real warehouse vibe and a brilliant atmosphere from the moment we walked in. There was a brief moment of sheer panic after looking at the 'rotary mixer' that I was supposed to use, a rotary mixer has no faders, just big knobs that you turn when you want to bring the music in. It took abit of getting used to but was fine in the end...I loved playing, highlights were Primal Scream - Rocks as a penultimate track and the new Daft Punk Para One remix. We stuck around to check out Mylo's set which was suitably fantastic, he played everything from vintage disco to glitchy electro house.
We left in the morning and poor Lucy the designated driver had to spend three hours driving with no one to talk to, just four ladies fast asleep, heads lolling, mouths wide open, even some snoring, all the way to London.
Last night...
Hey Ho, so I'm pleased to say that I've stopped uttering the horrible 'aaiiiee' which I kept doing last night in the studio... really enjoyed last night's show, loved the music, esp that L.O.V.E track remixed by Ashley Beadle, Ben Westbeech, Benny Page, Tiefschwarz and Roots Manuva was pretty heavy. It's funny when you listen to a track in the office and when you play it on the radio, sometimes a track can come alive on the radio, Roots Manvua sounded much better on the radio...
It was great to catch up with all the can't stoppers and cherry poppers, thanks for getting in touch!!! And what about Bubakings minimix? what dod you think? better than the Anti Chris? I'm not sure..
Am off to have a mix now as have loads of new tunes to catch up on before the ladies rave weekend begins....
sunsheeeiiine..
Aaaagh, for the third morning this week I am up and about before 10am. It's all the suns fault. The weather is tropical in london and it's hard to stay in bed when you know that it's a beautiful day outside..This weeks show is looking good, new music from Peaches, Roots Manuva, Tiefschwarz and Nightmares on Wax and all my favourites, Popper, High contrast Gold digger mix, Ahsley Beadles remix of L.O.V.E and a minimix from LAYO and BUSHWHACKA. Mind you I am going record shopping this afternoon so that could all change...
We'll also be calling out to all the can't stoppers and all the cherry poppers and trying to convert as many cherry poppers into can't stoppers as we can!
I'm going on a ladies rave weekend tomorrow. Me and 4 lady friends are off to Newcastle on Friday night, where I am Djing with Justice at Wax On @ Digital and then driving to Leeds to DJ with Mylo at Northern Lights. Somewhere between Newcastle and Leeds we will try and take in the footie. Am really looking forward to it..what are your weekend plans then! come on!
one more show..
Just home after the show. highlights included playing The Similou again for the first time in a few weeks, new Bugz In The Attic track, that gypsy house remix by Felix from Basement Jaxx, The Roots You Got Me, and the Simian Mobile Disco minimix. Phew.
