Germany has produced many famous novelists. These include Heinrich Böll, Thomas Mann, Franz Kafka and Günter Grass.

Germany's most prolific and well-known author is Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832). He wrote not only novels – Romane – but also poetry and plays – Gedichte und Theaterstücke. He was also an amateur artist, essayist and literary critic.

The Goethe-Institut, which promotes the language and culture of Germany throughout the world, was established in 1951.
