Applying the principles of SPORT to stamina training

Stamina can be increased by making the heart and lungs work hard enough so that they adapt, becoming fitter and more efficient at carrying out their function in the process.

A variety of approaches are available to develop stamina. These include:

  • Continuous training – swimming, cycling, running continuously
  • Fartlek training – varied pace cycling, running or swimming
  • Interval training - swimming, cycling, running with active recovery periods or rests
  • Conditioning training - swimming, cycling, running activities done on the move with skill being developed at the same time.
