Describing appearance and personality

When you want to describe your appearance, you may want to say that you have something, eg I have blue eyes.

Read the following descriptions, written by two people, one of whom lives in south Wales and the other in north Wales. If you live in south Wales, focus on the first passage. If you live in north Wales, focus on the second.

South Wales:

Sam ydw i. Mae gwallt byr, du a llygaid brown gyda fi. Mae wyneb bach gyda fi ond does dim dannedd bach gyda fi. Mae bochau coch gyda fi a does dim clustiau bach gyda fi.

Question

So, how do you say I have…? and I haven’t…?

North Wales:

Joe ydw i. Mae gen i wallt , brown a llygaid glas. Mae gen i wyneb mawr ond does gen i ddim dannedd mawr. Mae gen i fochau coch a does gen i ddim clustiau bach.

You will see that the first letter of some words change after Mae gen i, eg Mae gen i wallt brown because of the soft mutation.

Question

Join the two parts of the sentence using the soft mutation if needed. The first one has already been done for you.

  1. Mae gen i + gwallt du = Mae gen i wallt du.
  2. Mae gen i + llygaid gwyrdd
  3. Mae gen i + talcen mawr
  4. Mae gen i + gên hir
  5. Mae gen i + dannedd bach

Read the following online profile where Catrin describes herself.

Dw i'n dal ac mae gen i wallt hir melyn a llygaid brown. Dw i'n berson hapus a bywiog. Dw i'n meddwl fy mod i'n ddiddorol a charedig. Dw i'n hoffi pobl siaradus ond dw i ddim yn hoffi pobl ddistaw. Dw i'n mwynhau

You will see that some of the words in these sentences have been mutated. This is because adjectives beginning with p, t, c, b, d, g and m undergo a soft mutation after yn/'n, eg

tal: Dw i'n dal. – I'm tall.

doniol: Dw i'n meddwl fy mod i'n ddoniol. – I think that I am funny.
