Who are the Spice Girls?

It’s now been over 30 years since legendary British girl band the Spice Girls first formed and became pop culture icons in the 90s. Formed in 1994, the chart-topping group consisted of five members – Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell (now Horner), Victoria Adams (now Beckham), Melanie Brown (Mel B) and Melanie Chisholm (Mel C).
Selling millions of records worldwide, the Spice Girls were known for their “Girl Power” mantra – inspiring women and girls around the world to feel empowered, support one another and embrace their own identity. Although a group, individually the band members were known for their distinct personas and famous nicknames - Emma being Baby Spice, Geri being Ginger Spice, Victoria being Posh Spice, Mel B being Scary Spice and Mel C being known as Sporty Spice.
It was in 1996 that the Spice Girls released their debut single, Wannabe, and saw their lives change forever. The best-selling girl group of all time, they became loved for other hits like 2 Become 1, Who Do You Think You Are, Spice Up Your Life, Viva Forever and more.

How did the Spice Girls get their band name and nicknames?

It’s hard to imagine the Spice Girls looking and sounding different to the loved girl group that first burst onto the scenes in the 1990s – but they almost did. In fact, the original line-up did not consist of all the five members the world came to know, and the band even had a different name in its early days.
In 1994, Heart Management placed an advertisement in the newspaper 'The Stage' for singers to audition for a new girl group, which was originally called Touch. There was almost another Mel, Mel Coloma, in the band and in the early days. Michelle Stephenson was also in the group, before being replaced by late addition Emma Bunton.
When they changed labels, the band changed their name to Spice and started to become known in the industry as the Spice Girls, a name which stuck. As for their famous names – Baby Spice, Ginger Spice, Posh Spice, Scary Spice and Sporty Spice - it was British magazine Top of the Pops which gave the band members their own nicknames, which stuck.

How successful were the Spice Girls?

The Spice Girls’ debut song, Wannabe, made them a household name around the world - and from there, it was success after success. Released on 8 July 1996, Wannabe was the UK number one single for seven weeks and the following year in 1997, it topped the US Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks.
The group's first two albums, Spice (1996) and Spice World (1997), both went to number one in the charts, and including ‘Wannabe’, they had nine number one songs. Their eight other chart-topping hits were Say You’ll Be There, 2 Become 1, Mama/Who Do You Think You Are, Spice Up Your Life, Too Much, Stop, Goodbye and Holler/Let Love Lead the Way.
At the time, the Spice Girls became only the second group in history to score three consecutive Christmas number one singles – 2 Become 1 (1996), Too Much (1997) and Goodbye (1998). The Beatles set the precedent in the 1960s and since, the only other act to pull off the festive hat-trick is LadBaby.
In their time, the Spice Girls won numerous awards, including two Brit Awards at their first ceremony in 1997. At the event, they performed on stage and Geri made headlines for wearing her iconic Union Jack dress.
After their second album, the band also came to the big screen with their debut film Spiceworld: The Movie. Making over £150 million at the box office, the film starred big names like Richard E Grant, Roger Moore, Meat Loaf, Stephen Fry, Alan Cumming, Bob Geldof, Elton John, Jennifer Saunders, Bob Hoskins and many more.
With their success also came a lot of merchandise and sponsorship deals. The Spice Girls had their own dolls, bedding, lunchboxes and more that were treasured by fans worldwide and also starred in famous advertisements for the likes of Pepsi and Walker’s Crisps.

Why were the Spice Girls so popular?

There are many reasons why the Spice Girls were so popular in their time and they continue to reach new generations. One obvious reason would be their infectious, catchy songs that were mostly high energy and brought something new and exciting to the pop genre.
The group also came onto the scene when all-male Britpop groups like Blur and Oasis dominated the charts. But their popularity was not confined to the music they created.
The Spice Girls had a huge influence as the individual band members all had their own diverse and marketable identities, enabling them to connect with a wider audience. All five stars had different looks, styles, personalities and came from different backgrounds, something that stood out to the previous girl groups that came before them.
This allowed fans to be able to relate to one or more of the members for numerous reasons and enjoy their music with friends and loved ones who favoured different members. The members were unapologetically their authentic selves which made them feel real and relatable to fans.
The Girl Power mantra was also incredibly powerful, as it empowered girls and women to embrace one another and their own identities, be confident and create a sense of community and friendship.
Today, it’s not unusual to see famous faces partake in brand endorsements and advertisements – but in the 90s, the Spice Girls were among the first to use it to their advantage. During the second half of the 90s, it was nearly impossible to go into most shops without seeing something related to the band, whether it was one of their own products or something that reminded fans of their style and character.

Which Spice Girls member are you?
When did the Spice Girls break-up?

After taking the 1990s music and pop culture scene by storm, the latter end of the decade saw massive change for the band. In May 1998, fans across the globe were devastated to hear that Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice) was leaving the Spice Girls, citing “differences” and exhaustion.
In the following weeks, song Viva Forever went to number one in the charts and in the stop motion animated video, made by Steve Box of Wallace and Gromit creators Aardman Animations, Geri still appeared alongside her former bandmates as fairies. The following year in 1999, Geri began releasing music as a solo artist.
The Spice Girls continued as a four-piece until 2000, releasing songs such as Goodbye and Holler, but officially broke up in 2001. The remaining four group members – Emma, Victoria, Mel C and Mel B - also embarked on solo careers after the Spice Girls.
