| Saturday, 1 June, 2002, 09:07 GMT 10:07 UK Flags fly for Jubilee celebrations Youngsters from Caia Park celebrate the jubilee The bunting has been erected and the red, white and blue flags are up for the start of the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations. Dozens of local communities have organised parties throughout north east Wales to mark the special occasion.
Street closures have been earmarked throughout the region - in Wrexham 13 roads will be shut, 10 in Denbighshire and 20 in Flintshire. For a north Wales nursery the celebration has been a battle against time. Less than a month ago Caia Park Nursery was broken into and ransacked by vandals but staff have put the past behind them to celebrate Her Majesty's 50-year reign. Headteacher Sheila Meadows said: "When we had the vandalism here it was quite devastating but everything is now back to normal.
"This is what the event is about, to say thank you for getting everything back together so quickly." Twenty eight toddlers aged between three and four attend the centre but the Jubilee event included local playgroups, mother and toddler group and the elderly people's luncheon club. More than 50 people, young and old and all dressed in red, white and blue gathered for the lunch and entertainment. Ms Meadows felt it was important to organise the event: "The children will never see another Golden Jubilee. "It is quite an historical moment to have a Queen who has reigned so long." Vicky Coppell brought her two-year-old daughter to the festivities. "I think it's important for her to mix with older children and it will be nice for her to look back at pictures to remember the jubilee," she said. To mark the historical event each youngster will receive a commemorative medal paid for by the community council. | See also: 19 Apr 02 | Wales 22 Apr 02 | Wales 29 Apr 02 | Wales 01 Jun 02 | Wales 29 Jan 02 | Wales 08 Jan 02 | Wales Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
