Caia Park Nursery School was forced to close for three days after the incident.

But police have admitted they are powerless to deal with the young perpetrators.

The children believed to have been involved have been spoken to by officers but they are below the age of criminal responsibility.

The community rallied round the nursery and helped clean up the site after toys and chairs were thrown around, taps were left running and paint was splashed across the room.

Volunteers worked throughout the weekend so the centre could re-open for the youngsters.

Head teacher Sheila Meadows said everyone who works at the unit had been affected.

"Everyone is terribly upset by what has happened," she said.

"I want to thank the parents of the children for the way they have supported us and the kindness, understanding and determination they have shown to rebuild the very special nursery school that we have here."

The school caters for 28 children and provides facilities for special needs.

Wrexham council director of education Terry Garner said: "We are now pulling out all the stops to ensure that the school is back to normal."

The age of criminal responsibility begins at 10 years, therefore juveniles cannot be dealt with as criminals by the police or the courts.

The council has said it is liaising with the police over the incident.

However, a police spokesman added only limited action could be taken because of the age of the children.

Claire Jones from North Wales Police said: "Police spoke to both the juveniles and to their parents and investigated in accordance with procedures.

"We are liaising with social services and the local authority regarding the incident.

"We are guided by strict rules. The age of criminal responsibility begins at 10 years, therefore juveniles cannot be dealt with as criminals by the police or the courts.

"Juveniles are below the age of criminal responsibility and the jurisdiction of the courts."
