| Friday, 19 April, 2002, 12:39 GMT 13:39 UK Child vandals force nursery closure ![]() The vandals caused thousands of pounds worth of damage A north Wales nursery has had to close after children - thought to be as young as six or seven - broke in and vandalised the property. Equipment and materials were damaged in the raid on the Wrexham nursery which provides pre-school education for three to four year olds.
Caia Park Nursery School was forced to close for three days after the incident on Tuesday evening. Police officers talked to the children believed to be responsible, but they are under 10, which is the age of criminal responsibility. Residents helped in the clean-up operation and plans for fund-raising events have been put in place. Staff, parents and neighbours have cleaned walls and floors after toys and chairs were thrown around, taps were left running and paint was splashed across the room. Head teacher Sheila Meadows said everyone who works at the unit has been effected. "Everyone is terribly upset by what has happened," she said. "I want to thank the parents of the children for the way they have supported us and the kindness, understanding and determination they have shown to rebuild the very special nursery school that we have here." Investigation The school caters for 28 children and provides facilities for special needs. Wrexham council director of education Terry Garner said: "We are now pulling out all the stops to ensure that the school is back to normal by Monday morning. "Staff will be working throughout the weekend to ensure the children have normal facilities when they return." The council has said it is liaising with the police over the incident. However, a police spokesman added only limited action could be taken because of the age of the children. Juveniles Claire Jones from North Wales Police said: "Police spoke to both the juveniles and to their parents and investigated in accordance with procedures. "We are liaising with social services and the local authority regarding the incident. "We are guided by strict rules. The age of criminal responsibility begins at 10 years, therefore juveniles cannot be dealt with as criminals by the police or the courts. "Juveniles are below the age of criminal responsibility and the jurisdiction of the courts." | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
