Thousands of people are expected to gather in Wrexham for the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations in June.

Council bosses have received more than 30 applications for street parties across the county and voluntary organisations are expected to spend more than 4,000 on a party for the 15 June.

Forty two groups including the scouts and playgroups have pledged their support to the community initiative at the Llwyn Isaf Green in the town centre.

John Gallanders, Chief Officer of Association of Voluntary Organiastions in Wrexham (Avow) said the scheme has been well received.

"We have had no negative feedback from anybody and we have 42 organisations who have agreed to take part," he said

"The afternoon will consist of a number of static displays and a number of arena type events ranging from school bands, gymnastic groups and a choir."

The general public think volunteering is just serving in a coffee bar but we have 67 organisations within the county borough

Amateur dramatic groups will re-enact the 50-years of the Queens Jubilee and stall holders have been encouraged to interpret the different eras.

Volunteer Organiser, Ann Vaughan, said it was a great scheme: "We see it as an excellent opportunity to promote volunteering.

"The general public think volunteering is just serving in a coffee bar but we have 67 organisations within the county borough."

Flo Hardman who works for the Workers Education Association in Caia Park will attend the event.

She teaches the elderly to work with arts and crafts.

"We will do some demonstrations and show people all the crafts we have done," she said.

"It brings the community together then it's a good idea."

The free event will finish at 1700BST and the Jubilee relay run will begin at 1800BST.

Special message

Wrexham has been chosen as one of the 49 UK celebration sites to take part in the event.

The baton contains a special message written by Her Majesty The Queen.

The Mayor of Wrexham, Councillor Sandy Mewies said: "It will be an exciting evening and I hope as many people as possible become involved in the celebration.

Wrexham County Borough Council have not yet finalised their itinerary of events for the occasion.
